The mission of the ) is to contribute to public health protection by engaging with an international community of experts and stakeholders. We achieve this by promoting access to safe medicines and healthcare through the elaboration of quality standards, which are recognised as a scientific benchmark worldwide. The EDQM's standards for medicines and their ingredients, compiled in the European Pharmacopoeia, are legally binding in 39 member states of the Council of Europe and are also widely used across the globe in the human and animal health sectors. The EDQM also plays a crucial role in the areas of blood transfusion, organ, tissue and cell transplantation and in developing and setting consumer health standards, such as for cosmetics and food contact materials.
The team you will be working in, the Linguistic Services and Scientific Editing Division (which is part of the European Pharmacopoeia Department), provides linguistic support, i.e. translation from English into French and vice versa and copy-editing, for documents produced and/or published by the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & Healthcare.
As an English Language Copy-Editor, you will:
- edit and proofread texts – mainly of a scientific nature – drafted by the various entities of the EDQM for grammar, punctuation, spelling and style, ensure clarity and readability for the target audience and consistency in terminology, formatting, structure and presentation of references, in line with internal style guides;
- help develop and maintain internal style guides;
- use your scientific knowledge/copy-editing experience across a variety of subject areas to re-draft or re-present information about EDQM activities in a manner suitable for the target audience;
- flag style and text inconsistencies, offer suggestions to improve awkward or unclear language, and resolvequeries directly with authors and other colleagues within and outside the division (translators, scientific editors, etc.); provide constructive feedback to authors and contributors to support continuous improvement in scientific writing;
- participate in departmental and cross-entity projects, depending on training, interests and competencies.
You must:
- hold a higher education degree or qualification (equivalent to the first cycle of the ) in pharmacy, chemistry, biology or a similar subject together with at least three years’ proven experience copy-editing texts of a scientific/technical nature in at least one of the fields covered by the EDQM (quality standards for medicinal products and their ingredients, substances of human origin, pharmaceutical care, food contact materials, cosmetics, etc.);
OR
hold a higher education degree or qualification (equivalent to the first cycleof the) in a relevant discipline (e.g. English, communications, journalism, media studies) together with extensive (at least five years) and proven experience copy-editing texts of a scientific/technical nature in at least one of the fields covered by the EDQM (see above);
- have a an excellent knowledge of English (first language level)
- have basic knowledge of French or the capacity to acquire the knowledge on the job.
You must also:
- be a citizen of one of the member states of the Council of Europe and fulfil the conditions for appointment to the civil service of that state;
- have discharged any obligation concerning national service (military, civil or comparable);
- not be the parent, child, stepchild or grandchild of a serving staff member of the Council of Europe;
- be under the age of 65 years.

- experience in management of parts of projects;
- linguistic knowledge concerning terminology, spelling, syntax; understanding of jargon used in different scientific work fields;
- sound computer skills of standard tools in office applications (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation software, Outlook, internet/intranet publications).
