Internal and external candidates will be considered for this vacancy. 

For the purposes of this vacancy, internal candidates are defined as staff members holding a regular, fixed-term or short-term graded or ungraded contract, including Junior Professional Officers (JPOs), UN Volunteers with at least twelve (12) months of continuous service in IOM, staff on Special Leave Without Pay (SLWOP), and staff members on secondment/loan released by the Organization, unless otherwise specified in their contract. Staff members holding a regular, fixed-term or short-term graded contract will not retain their contract type if appointed to an ungraded position.
 

Context

Under the overall supervision of the Head of Editorial and direct supervision of the Communications Officer (Thematic), and technical supervision of the Private Sector Partnerships (PSP) Division’s Head of Individual Giving, the Communications Officer (Individual Giving) is accountable and responsible for supporting the design and implementation of effective communication strategies and activities to support overall individual giving strategy, creating a platform of awareness, engagement and amplification of messages in key target audiences that enables optimal performance of individual giving direct response and audience conversion activity.


The Department of Media and Communications (DMC) at IOM is dedicated to managing and promoting global communications efforts across IOM Headquarters in Geneva and regional offices worldwide. The DMC provides essential media relations support, manages IOM’s global social media presence, curates content, drives branding, and leads global awareness campaigns. As the communications team grows and evolves, there is a need to further develop the creation of compelling and engaging content that captures the work and impact of IOM.


The PSP builds partnerships with the private sector that enable IOM's strategic priorities and engage the private sector as a key stakeholder in migration through impactful and innovative partnerships. PSP leads strategic outreach and engagement with the private sector and provides Headquarters, Regional and Country Offices with assistance and expertise relating to initiating, establishing and maintaining partnerships with the private sector. PSP is responsible for the development and implementation of IOM’s Private Sector Strategy which provides a framework for how IOM engages with the private sector to support safe, orderly and regular migration. PSP oversees engagement with the private sector, establishes and coordinates IOM’s private sector partnerships due diligence process, builds staff capacity in private sector partnership-building and oversees the Goodwill Ambassador programme and celebrity engagement programme.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  1. Coordinate, integrate and deliver communications outputs related to individual giving and private sector fundraising, ensuring alignment of IOM’s global communications strategies, priorities, and editorial direction as set by DMC, individual giving strategy and the needs of key fundraising target audiences.

  2. Lead the development of compelling, donor-focused storytelling and impact content that builds awareness and engagement in individual giving target audiences across digital and offline platforms, translating IOM’s operational impact into narratives that inspire engagement, support, and trust.

  3. Serve as the DMC focal point for individual giving communications, working closely with PSP to identify needs, shape messaging, and adapt content for fundraising and engagement purposes, while ensuring consistency with IOM’s institutional voice.

  4. Work closely the individual giving campaign project teams and integrate into individual giving workstreams, understanding the overall fundraising campaign calendar, all fundraising campaign briefs and the role of communications within them. Source, commission, and curate content to ensure a constant flow of relevant, high quality content that delivers on the overall objectives of individual giving strategy and each campaign brief, drawing strategically from IOM’s global content pipeline, including collaboration with HQ units, Regional Offices, Country Offices, and external partners such as National Committees (e.g., USA for IOM), as appropriate.

  5. In collaboration with DMC editorial, Online Communications Unit, social media, and multimedia teams, produce and adapt high-quality communication products, including relevant fundraising campaign materials, stories, scripts, presentations, and donor-facing content that support fundraising campaign plans and briefs.

  6. Ensure that the strongest content possible is delivered to fundraising creative teams and work collaboratively with those teams to ensure that conversion focused individual giving collateral is high-quality, responsive and donor focused creative.

  7. Ensure outputs aligned with IOM’s brand, style, tone and editorial standards and ensure that all communications products adhere to those standards while maintaining fundraising integrity.

  8. Manage communications approval processes, as defined by individual giving campaign timelines, aligned with approved messaging, clearance processes and fundraising requirements.

  9. Contribute to the development and execution of content and engagement strategies aimed at individual donors and private sector audiences, in line with broader DMC communications objectives, individual giving strategy and IOM’s wider resource mobilization goals.

  10. Collaborate with individual giving paid media and creative specialists on creative approaches, content formats, and storytelling opportunities across channels, informed by audience insights, fundraising trends, and benchmarking with peer organizations.

  11. Monitor awareness and engagement metrics and work with fundraising analytics and paid media functions to build clear audience journeys and the performance of communications and fundraising messaging and support fundraising outcomes.

  12. Perform such other tasks as may be assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • Master’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field with five years of relevant professional experience; or,

  • University degree in the above fields with seven years of relevant professional experience.

Accredited Universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.

Experience

  • Proven experience in individual giving fundraising or business to consumer marketing, particularly in international or non-profit organizations;

  • Experience in content creation, including writing and editing for digital media, website content, and social media platforms;

  • Track record of delivering continuous high volume, high quality, audience focused content;

  • Track record of using available audience insights and behaviour to inform content planning and development;

  • Proven experience in strategic communications and donor engagement strategies; and,

  • Experience working with private sector stakeholders, businesses, or philanthropies in supporting humanitarian or development initiatives is an advantage.

Skills

  • Knowledge of donor or customer journeys and the role of brand awareness and engagement touch points in delivering responsive conversion campaigns;

  • Clear understanding of marketing funnel metrics with a particular focus on awareness and engagement stages;

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft messages for diverse audiences;

  • Have a good knowledge of individual giving engagement strategies and fundraising communications;

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and deliver high-quality work under pressure;

  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary project team; and,

  • Proficiency in content management systems (CMS), multimedia editing tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.

Languages 

All staff members in all categories are required to be fluent in one of the IOM’s official languages (English, French, and Spanish).

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written).

Working knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
