Duties and Responsibilities
Background: The African Centre for Statistics (ACS) is headed by a director and reports to the Deputy Executive Secretary (Programme). The Centre is responsible for improving the production, dissemination and use of quality and credible data statistics, and integrated geospatial information in Africa to support evidence-based planning, policymaking, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and reporting under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Agenda 2063, The Africa We want and country-specific national and sectoral development plans. The Centre is responsible for improving the production, dissemination and use of quality and credible data statistics, and integrated geospatial information in Africa to support evidence-based planning, policymaking, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and reporting under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Agenda 2063, The Africa We want and country-specific national and sectoral development plans. The Division is divided into three sections: Data Capability and Geospatial Knowledge; Statistical Production, Methods and Research; and Coordination, Partnership and Policy Outreach. The internship is in the Office of the Director at the African Centre for Statistics, Economic Commission for Africa. The intern reports directly to the Centre's Director. The intern will support statistical data compilation and analysis, economic data management and harmonization, and research assistance for policy-oriented analytical work. The intern will also contribute to dashboard and data tool support, documentation and reporting, and selected capacity-building and training activities. Expected results of service include organized and standardized datasets, timely preparation of basic analytical outputs and background materials, improved documentation and record-keeping, and strengthened support to the implementation of ongoing analytical and statistical work. Under the direct supervision of the Director of the African Centre for Statistics, the intern will be responsible for the following tasks: i. Profile use cases for emerging data sources and evaluate their suitability for addressing data gaps. ii. Assist in compiling metadata from various national and international statistical websites. iii. Support the ongoing comparability of African development indicators across different databases. iv. Contribute to the creation of statistical tools to automate analytical processes. v. Provide insights on emerging tools for modern visualization of statistical results. vi. Prepare statistical summaries, including methods and key findings.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Completion of a master’s degree or enrolment in a Ph.D. program in a development-related field are strongly desirable. Applicants to the United Nations Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, are you currently pursuing, or have you completed, a field of study closely related to this internship? Applicants must be either in the final year of a first university degree programme (bachelor’s or equivalent), enrolled in a master’s or Ph.D. programme (or equivalent), or have completed a bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. programme. Do you meet one of these criteria? If yes, please specify which one and attach proof to your application. Please note that an official certificate may be required at a later stage Do you have familiarity with statistical and data-processing tools, particularly R or Python, and experience working with quantitative datasets, including cross-sectional, time-series, panel datasets? Do you have experience collecting, cleaning, validating, and organizing quantitative data from multiple sources for analytical use? Do you have experience supporting applied research, preparing concise analytical summaries, and clearly documenting methods and findings? Do you have experience producing clear data visualizations or dashboards to communicate analytical findings effectively?
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
