Duties and Responsibilities
Background: The African Centre for Statistics (ACS) is headed by a director and reports to the Deputy Executive Secretary (Programme). The Centre is responsible for improving the production, dissemination and use of quality and credible data statistics, and integrated geospatial information in Africa to support evidence-based planning, policymaking, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and reporting under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Agenda 2063, The Africa We want and country-specific national and sectoral development plans. The Division is divided into three sections: Data Capability and Geospatial Knowledge; Statistical Production, Methods and Research; and Coordination, Partnership and Policy Outreach. The internship is in the Office of the Director at the African Centre for Statistics, Economic Commission for Africa. The intern reports directly to each section chiefs. The intern will support statistical data compilation and analysis, economic data management and harmonization, and research assistance for policy-oriented analytical work. The intern will also contribute to dashboard and data tool support, documentation and reporting, and selected capacity-building and training activities. Expected results of service include organized and standardized datasets, timely preparation of basic analytical outputs and background materials, improved documentation and record-keeping, and strengthened support to the implementation of ongoing analytical and statistical work. Under the direct supervision of each section chiefs, the intern will • Assist in the work in economic, social, demographic, spatial, environmental and other related areas as required. • Conduct literature reviews on statistical frameworks, indicators, case studies and country practices related to the aforementioned areas. • Contribute to drafting background research papers, presentations, blogs and technical documents in various fields of statistics • Support the organization and servicing of meetings and events, including Expert Group Meetings, Regional Steering Group meetings, seminars, trainings and workshops (e.g. preparation of materials, note-taking, and follow-up). • Provide support to capacity-building activities for countries in the African region. • Support communication activities related to the work of the section, including newsletters, websites and online platforms • Perform any other duties as requested.
Qualifications/special skills
1) Applications must meet one of the following educational requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation; 2) Be computer literate in standard software applications; 3) Have a demonstrated and keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and 4) Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views . Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. However, applicants are encourage to list all relevant work experience in their person history profile.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
