The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP plays a key role in supporting countries to implement the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and in biodiversity commitments. Despite growing political momentum, the global biodiversity finance gap remains significant, with current public and private financial flows falling far short of what is required to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. Closing this gap will require increased public finance, better alignment of existing financial flows with biodiversity objectives, and the mobilization of private and blended finance. As a broader system actor, UNEP aims to define its niche, prioritizing areas of comparative advantage, and developing a coherent strategy to mobilize and deploy biodiversity finance in support of global and national objectives. The intern will work with the Biodiversity Finance Working Group to support this effort. Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the GEF Biodiversity Task Manager, the intern will assist the Biodiversity Finance Working Group. More specifically, the internship will have the following tasks: 1) Support to perform methodological research and analysis from diverse sources on nature and finance-related themes especially around metrics, indicators, and data. 2) Assist in monitoring of academic publications on related themes and convert these into digestible highlights for the Biodiversity Finance Working Group. 3)Assist the Task Manager in drafting targeted presentations, briefing notes and speaking points based on the Working Group’s findings. 4) Provide support for the coordination, administrative and communications support for the operations of the working group for example scheduling meetings, sharing documentation with members, maintaining the Working Group’s Intranet page, organizing and minuting meetings, 5)Assist to liaise with relevant in-house and external partners as necessary or requested by the team. 6)Attend the meetings, trainings and conferences of relevance to UNEP in Geneva. 7)Performing other relevant duties as assigned.

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) preferably in the area of a relevant domain and experience with AI tools or technologies is required: Please describe your experience working with AI tools or technologies. Include specific examples of projects, platforms, or tools you have used, and your role in those initiatives. Research and analysis skills is required : Have you conducted research or written reports on emerging technologies, digital trends, or AI-related topics? b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected. For this internship, any relevant academic and/or practical experience with data compilation, data analysis, data dissemination and visualization and/or mapping of numeric analysis is desirable. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required. NOTE: "Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.
