Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP's Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the GEF Biodiversity Task Manager, the intern will assist the UNEP/GEF Biodiversity-Land degradation Unit in developing artificial intelligence based project and portfolio's monitoring tools and products to assist results oriented project delivery. More specifically, the internship will have the following tasks: 1) Assist in conducting research on emerging AI trends, tools, and best practices relevant to UNEP’s Project cycle management work. 2) Support in preparation of internal papers, reports and/or presentations on these topics. Share findings with the rest of the unit. 3) Assist to explore and test emerging AI tools and approaches through quick, low-effort prototypes specifically contribute to the development and deployment of Microsoft Copilot Studio agents and related automation tools. 4) Support in contribution of the development and refinement of a Prompt Catalogue to support effective use of generative AI. 5)Assist in collaboration with other UNEP internal teams to identify practical use cases for AI tools and assess their feasibility through rapid testing. 6) Support the organization and coordination of regular meetings, workshops, and webinars in designing the Unit’s AI based project monitoring systems. 7) Assist by using AI produce short summaries / videos of how AI based monitoring tools can be used to aid unit staff in their work. 8)Attend the meetings, trainings and conferences of relevance to UNEP in Geneva, 9)Performing other relevant duties as assigned.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) preferably in the area of a relevant domain and experience with AI tools or technologies is required: Please describe your experience working with AI tools or technologies. Include specific examples of projects, platforms, or tools you have used, and your role in those initiatives. Research and analysis skills is required : Have you conducted research or written reports on emerging technologies, digital trends, or AI-related topics? b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected. For this internship, any relevant academic and/or practical experience with data compilation, data analysis, data dissemination and visualization and/or mapping of numeric analysis is desirable. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required. NOTE: "Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.
