Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

Job Description

Introduction:

You will join the CMS experiment Engineering & Integration team to work on the upgrade of the detector for High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). Your activity will be focused on the construction and commissioning of the new detector environmental monitoring system and the engineering and integration of the Machine Detector Interface, for what concerns the integration of the HL-LHC accelerator elements in the detector forward region.

Functions:

  • Participate in the design, construction, and installation of new detectors and their infrastructure.
  • Contribute to the integration and commissioning of detectors.
  • Work within the technical coordination team on the CMS experiment upgrades for the high-luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC).
  • Contribute to the tasks of the CMS Engineering & Integration Office, by participating in concurrent multidisciplinary projects.
  • Take a leading role in the integration, construction, and commissioning of the CMS environmental monitoring system.
  • Take the lead in the integration of the different elements of the accelerator in the forward region of the detector (beampipe vacuum pumping system, radiation shielding, etc.).
  • Write up technical specifications for the procurement of goods for the upgrade of the CMS detector.
  • Present your work to the CMS Collaboration via technical reports and talks at relevant conferences and workshops.

Qualifications

Master's Degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in the geometrical and functional integration of complex systems, using a multidisciplinary approach.
  • Proven ability in designing mechanical assemblies using 3D CAD tools (preferably CATIA), and in performing thermal and structural calculations of complex mechanical structures with FEA methods (preferably Ansys).
  • Strong background in writing technical specifications and following up on supplies.
  • Experience in planning and coordination of activities on the field.
  • Initial experience in designing and building PLC-based data acquisition and control systems (preferably using Siemens hardware).

Technical competencies:

  • Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment.
  • Knowledge and application of numerical modelling in solid mechanics.
  • Integration of mechanical systems.
  • Production of 2D drawings and 3D models.
  • Knowledge of design codes and compliance verification of mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge and application of instrumentation and measurement techniques.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Achieving Results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations.
  • Learning and Sharing Knowledge: proposing ways to improve or streamline existing procedures, processes and methodologies.
  • Solving Problems: addressing complex problems by breaking them down into manageable components.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language.
