Your team

You will be part of the Money, Credit and Financial Accounts Section in the Monetary Analysis Division of the Directorate General Monetary Policy. Our Directorate General monitors and analyses the ECB’s monetary policy strategy and stance, as well as broader monetary and financial developments.

In your role as Economist, you will be part of a team of around 20 members of staff responsible for analysing the transmission of monetary policy through money and credit. This involves examining the dynamics of bank and non-bank credit as well as broader financial flows in the euro area economy by applying state-of-the-art empirical methods to macroeconomic and granular data. We also analyse how developments in private sector balance sheets, macro-financial linkages, central bank digital currencies and climate change could affect monetary policy transmission and broader monetary conditions. In this position, you will work closely with the staff and management team of the Division and the Directorate General, as well as with stakeholders in other ECB business areas.

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As an Economist you will:
  • contribute to and coordinate the Section’s input into flagship products produced by the Division;
  • work together with other ECB business areas on high-level policy documents such as speeches by Executive Board members;
  • engage and collaborate with colleagues within the Division, the Directorate General and across the ECB;
  • help to improve the Section’s modelling infrastructure and employ it to provide policy advice;
  • foster the consolidation and growth of the team as a key contributor to the assessment of monetary policy transmission in the euro area;
  • present the results of analysis of key policy issues at ECB and Eurosystem fora.

We actively support professional development for our staff. Besides learning opportunities such as training and mentoring, we encourage and support horizontal mobility after some years in the same position.

The position offers you excellent opportunities to join a highly skilled and motivated team and to utilise and further develop your analytical skills to inform the ECB’s monetary policy decisions. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:
  • a master’s degree or equivalent in economics, finance or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • in addition to the above, a minimum of four years’ professional experience (other than as a trainee or intern) in the field of bank and non-bank finance, monetary policy or financial markets;
  • experience in working on projections or scenario analysis based on macro-econometric models;
  • a sound understanding of the transmission mechanism of monetary policy via banks, households and firms;
  • experience in drafting clear and well-structured notes to strict deadlines, as well as in preparing and delivering presentations drawing on state-of-the-art economic and econometric analysis;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:
  • a track record of research and publications in economics, finance or another relevant field.

You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.

You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe.

You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.
