Duties and Responsibilities

These internship positions are located in the Information and Communication Technology Service (ICTS) within the Division of Administration at UNOG. The interns will report to the Project Leaders for their selected position. Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Interns: The incumbent will be under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer working as full members of our team, pursue projects that are designed to make a significant difference in the whole department, and have opportunities to learn about the United Nations overall. We offer internship opportunities in three broad areas: Data Analytics, Data Strategy, and Outreach and Communications. Interns are sought who have skills matching one or more of the areas below and are sought on a continual basis. Data Analytics responsibilities: • Assist in the development of corporate visualization solutions derived from multiple data sources using state-of-the-art tools to enable insight and decision-making at various levels, and including the use of artificial intelligence (AI) as relevant. • Support the development of data models, including performance measures, to enable scorecard analysis. • Build interactive dashboards and reports, using corporate analytics applications. • Perform ad-hoc analysis and present results in a clear manner. • Work with MS Power BI, Tableau or other similar self-service analytics toolsets. • Work with relational databases such as SQL Server or other databases. • Support geo-spatial analysis and geographic information systems such as ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS, Leaflet, Carto or Open Street Map. • Work with analytical techniques such as sentiment analysis, predictive analysis or social media monitoring. Data Strategy Responsibilities: • Understand and support ICT on the implementation of the Secretary-General's Data Strategy. • Coordinate with multiple stakeholders to schedule meetings, gather feedback, and keep meeting minutes. • Support and update the list of data strategy used cases, fill out relevant documentation. • Coordinate and support data training and seminar activities as needed. • Perform ad-hoc analysis and present results in a clear manner. • Support data analytics or data policy. • Work with Microsoft Outlook and other desktop applications. • Work with MS Power BI, Tableau or other similar self-service analytics toolsets. Outreach and Communications Responsibilities: • Understand and support ICT's implementation of the Secretary-General's Data Strategy. • Coordinate with multiple stakeholders to schedule meetings, gather feedback, and keep meeting minutes. • Support and update the list of data strategy use cases, fill out relevant documentation. • Coordinate and support data training and seminar activities as needed. • Support data analytics or data policy Application Development Intern: ICTS develops and maintains applications and websites for several UNOG entities, using Drupal, .Net, PHP, Maria DB, SQL Server as main technologies. The work contributes to the development and maintenance of systems, following the development lifecycle and DevOps processes. Under the supervision of the Chief of Unit and in close collaboration with ICTS colleagues, the intern will assist with: • Gathering requirements for new systems or analyzing feedback for existing systems. • Designing solutions and creating prototypes. • Coding: developing solutions, implementing changes fixing bugs, etc. • Creating testing procedures and performing tests against beta versions. • Deploying systems to UAT and PROD environments and collecting testing feedback from users. • Documenting solutions and systems. Drupal Containerization Intern: ICTS is undergoing a digital transformation initiative to modernize its application infrastructure by setting up a modern Kubernetes platform. As part of this strategic initiative, we've established a comprehensive GitOps-based deployment pipeline using industry-standard tools including ArgoCD, Helm charts, and container orchestration. This internship role directly supports our application modernization roadmap, specifically targeting the containerization of Drupal-based web applications that currently run on traditional infrastructure. The work contributes to improving deployment processes, and enabling better resource utilization through containerization. Under the supervision of the Chief of Unit and in close collaboration with ICTS colleagues, the intern will assist with: • Researching and documenting current state of legacy web applications, identifying containerization challenges and dependencies • Contributing to the development of standardized containerization workflows for Drupal applications with MariaDB backends • Creating comprehensive playbooks covering container image building, configuration management, and database migration strategies • Establishing testing procedures to validate containerized applications maintain functional parity with legacy systems • Integrating containerized applications with existing GitOps pipeline using ArgoCD and Helm chart templates Communications, Knowledge Management, Business Intelligence & Digital Licensing Intern: ICTS provides IT, communications, and digital transformation services to UN Secretariat entities in Geneva and throughout the European region. The intern will join the Client Relationship Unit, supporting communication initiatives, knowledge management activities, business intelligence dashboards, and digital licensing administration—particularly for the Adobe enterprise environment and the Telephony Service. Under the supervision of the Chief of Unit and in close collaboration with ICTS colleagues, the intern will assist with: Communications Support • Draft, edit, and format internal communication materials. • Produce simple visuals: infographics, icons, presentation elements. • Support updates to ICTS intranet pages (SharePoint) and Teams channels. Knowledge Management • Assist in organizing, updating, and restructuring knowledge repositories (SOPs, guidelines, documentation). • Improve content tagging, versioning, and accessibility. • Help maintain knowledge sharing hubs and communities of practice. Business Intelligence & Dashboards • Support the creation and maintenance of simple dashboards using Power BI or Excel. • Clean and structure data for reporting purposes. • Assist in preparing routine ICTS metrics and analytics. Digital Licensing – Adobe Enterprise Environment The intern will support the Adobe licensing portfolio managed by ICTS. Tasks include: • Assisting in the administration of the Adobe enterprise licensing contract. • Helping with billing preparation, tracking cost centers, and maintaining consumption records. • Supporting license assignment and revocation through the Adobe Admin Console. • Ensuring that licensing data is accurate, up-to-date, and aligned with ICTS internal procedures. • Assisting with user requests for Adobe products and documenting usage/needs. Telephony Unit Support • Contribute to documenting workflows, lessons learned, and best practices. • Support ad-hoc communication, IT coordination, or data related tasks as required. Information Security Intern (Security Assessments) Intern: We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Information Security Intern to support our organization’s security assessment activities. This role includes assisting with the evaluation of our networks, applications, and computer systems to help identify potential risks and strengthen overall security. This internship is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in gaining hands-on experience in cybersecurity within a structured and supportive environment. Key Responsibilities Network Security Support • Help review how the organization’s networks are structured and identify potential areas of risk. • Assist in documenting network components and security controls. • Support the team with routine checks to ensure the network complies with internal security guidelines. Application Security Support • Assist in reviewing internal and external applications to ensure they follow secure design and usage practices. • Help track identified issues and follow up with technical teams on progress. • Contribute to improving documentation and assessment checklists. Host / Endpoint Security Support • Support the review of computers, servers, and devices to confirm they follow organizational security standards. • Help maintain inventories and records of security related findings. • Assist in monitoring the status and health of security tools installed on devices. Reporting & Documentation • Prepare clear summaries and basic reports of assessment activities. • Update internal tracking tools and help maintain organized assessment records. • Support communication between security and technical teams by summarizing observations in a clear, non technical way. General Support • Participate in meetings, knowledge-sharing sessions, and security awareness activities. • Follow internal policies and procedures related to confidentiality, acceptable use, and safe assessment practices. • Contribute to ongoing security improvement initiatives as assigned.

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Interested candidates must be pursuing or must have pursued their degree in Information Systems, Information Management, Computer Science, Communications, Data Science, Business Intelligence, Digital Media, or another field related to this Job Opening including Administration, Business, International Relations. Assets • Experience with Power BI, Excel dashboards, or other BI tools. • Familiarity with SharePoint, Teams, or the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. • Awareness of enterprise software licensing concepts (especially Adobe). • Visual design skills (PowerPoint, Canva, or Adobe Creative tools). • French language ability is an advantage. Information Security Intern (Security Assessments) Intern: Required Skills • Currently pursuing or recently completed studies in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Security, or a related field. • Basic understanding of how networks, applications, and computer systems operate. • Strong interest in cybersecurity and willingness to learn. • Good analytical, organizational, and communication skills. • Ability to follow instructions, handle sensitive information responsibly, and pay attention to detail. Assets • Previous coursework or introductory experience related to cybersecurity. • Familiarity with general IT concepts (operating systems, common applications, basic networking). • Curiosity and motivation to explore security topics independently. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of an additional United Nations official language is an asset (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish).
