Mission and objectives

OCHA’s overall goal in Ukraine is to ensure the delivery of effective and principled humanitarian action that meets the needs of the most vulnerable people. To achieve this, OCHA supports the Humanitarian Coordinator and humanitarian partners in operational coordination, humanitarian financing, public information, humanitarian analysis, advocacy and information management. In its effort to help alleviate the suffering of the affected population and respond to some of the long-term consequences, OCHA established a presence in Kyiv shortly after the outbreak of the crisis in 2014. Today, OCHA’s 40 plus staff in Kyiv and in its four operational hubs in Kramatorsk and Sievierodonetsk (GCA) and Donetsk and Luhansk (NGCA) work together to support the coordination of humanitarian assistance of international and national organizations.

Context

The position is located in the in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Ukraine. OCHA is part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHA's mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of the Humanitarian Affairs Officer, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

- Support monitoring, analysis, and reporting on humanitarian developments, needs, response gaps, and operational constraints, particularly in conflict-affected areas.
- Research, compile, verify, and analyze information from multiple sources to contribute to OCHA information products (e.g. situation reports, briefings, updates, presentations, and donor reports) in coordination with relevant units.
- Assist in humanitarian coordination processes, including support to the sub-national coordination group, thematic working group meetings, including providing secretariat and administrative support in meetings and events, including minutes taking, etc.
- Support information management functions, including maintaining contact lists, service mapping, referral pathways, and ensuring proper documentation and data tracking.
- Assist in monitoring programme implementation, including follow-up on referrals and partner responses.
- Assist in compiling, collating, verifying and triangulating of data/info for the drafting of OCHA regular information products in English, Ukrainian/Russian in collaboration with Public Information/Reporting Unit.
- Participate in field missions, inter-agency assessments, and monitoring visits, and support the identification of priority needs and vulnerable groups.
- Support the organization of meetings, events, and field missions, including preparation of agendas, minutes, and follow-up actions.
- Promote volunteerism and community engagement, including outreach to local volunteer groups and civil society, and support visibility through field stories and contributions to UNV platforms.
- Contribute to knowledge-sharing and reporting on volunteerism, including participation in UNV initiatives (e.g. International Volunteer Day) and submission of relevant content.
- Perform any other related duties as required in support of OCHA’s operational priorities.
