Project Context and Scope

IOM has been utilizing its extensive global logistics network to support aid delivery to Gaza since October 2023. As a global lead agency in displacement and emergency response, IOM leverages its global expertise in shelter and site management as well as data and research, support the humanitarian cluster system with a coordinated, evidence-based response. 

 
Organizational Department / Unit to which the Consultant is contributing

Under the overall supervision of the Regional Crisis Coordinator in Amman and direct supervision of the Media and Communications Officer and, the Translator (Arabic-English) will be responsible and accountable for all translation services needed to support IOM OPT external communication goals. 

Responsibilities

Tasks to be performed under this contract
  • Translating documents from Arabic to English or from English to Arabic, including but not limited to, website articles, social media posts, press releases, reports, legal document.  

  • Transcribing audio in Arabic and translation to English, including but not limited to, video uman interest stories from the field and news reports.  

  • Proofreading Arabic documents.

  • Translating Powerpoint slides, charts, graphics, maps and diagrams from English to Arabic for reports and presentations.

  • All translation should be in line with IOM and UN standard terminology, unless otherwise specificed (i.e. local dialects or Modern Standard Arabic).  

  • This position must be available outside of working hours to facilitate urgent translation requests and adhere to strict deadlines.

  • This position adheres to an agreed upon rate based on words and/or minutes translated, based on the local market. Average translation needs can range from 10,000 to 20,000 words, including 15-30 minutes of audio transcription and translation. Payment will be made on a monthly basis based on number of deliverables achieved that month. 

Performance indicators for the evaluation of results

The consultant’s performance will be assessed based on the following criteria:

Timeliness: Delivery of all assigned translations in accordance with agreed deadlines. Adherence to strict timelines is essential.  

Quality of Translation: Accuracy, clarity, and consistency of translated content, requiring minimal revisions.  

Revision Threshold: The number of revision cycles required to reach final approval should not exceed three (3). Any revisions requested after the agreed deadline should remain within this limit.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • School diploma with five years of relevant experience; or,
  • Bachelor’s degree in visual arts and design or any relevant field or related fields from an accredited academic institution with four years of relevant professional experience.
  • Master’s degree is an advantage. 

Experience

  • At least 5 years’ experience in various aspects of written and audio translation.

  • Proven experience using local Palestinian, specifically Gazan dialect, as well as Modern Standard Arabic.  

  • Prior work experience with international humanitarian organizations, non-government or government institutions/organization in a multi-cultural setting is a strong advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Notes

IOM covers Consultants against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the consultancy. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Consultants are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
