Your team
Within the The Aviation Transformation Directorate, the EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub (EIH) carries out research, innovation and simulation activities to help improve European aviation performance, safety and sustainability, bridging the gap between R&D and operations. The EIH also addresses emerging new technologies as well as deployment of drones and urban air mobility systems.
You will join the Centre of Expertise (CoE) and as a member of the Software Engineering domain play a pivotal role in designing, developing and implementing software solutions as part of EUROCONTROL’s innovation hub simulation platforms and projects.
Your role
Your role will be to:
- Contribute to the design, development and implementation of front‑end and back‑end software solutions within EUROCONTROL’s Innovation Hub projects, supporting high standards of operational availability, safety and efficiency, under the guidance of senior staff.
- Participate in capturing and analysing project needs in an iterative manner, working closely with end‑users, and support them in refining requirements by balancing expectations with technical feasibility.
- Contribute to the identification of technical solutions and the implementation of changes and bug fixes, including rapid prototyping, user demonstrations, and the preparation of appropriate documentation and unit tests.
- For selected projects, contribute to architecture and DevOps activities, and support the development and operation of cloud‑based applications serving R&D and innovation initiatives.
- Analyse system performance to identify potential shortcomings and propose effective solutions to resolve issues to improve system performance.
- Participate in system acceptance and performance testing activities, including testing of software changes and bug fixes; analyse incidents identified during testing from a user perspective, and contribute to validation activities to ensure implementations meet system requirements and safety standards.
- Contribute to the production of clear and structured technical documentation.
- Collaborate with internal and external teams and stakeholders on relevant technical matters.
- Carry out any other task in line with the main purpose of the job.
Required qualifications, experience & competencies

Candidates must fulfil the following educational and professional experience requirements:
- Completion of third level studies in a relevant field (e.g. Software Engineering), meeting European Qualifications Framework (EQF)Level 7 followed by at least 2 years relevant professional experience.
- Experience of server-side technologies: e.g. Java, Spring Boot, web services (WSDL, XML, REST/HTTP).
- Experience in Gradle or Maven and Linux.
- Knowledge or understanding in one of the following domains:
- Knowledge of browser technologies: React.js or equivalent, HTML5/CSS/SVG, TypeScript.
- Knowledge in database : e.g.MySQL, PostGreSQL, ElasticSearch.
- Understanding of Cloud technologies: Azure, Docker / Kubernetes, Message brokers (Kafka, Redis, NATS, etc.), Terraform.
- Use of AI-assisted coding tools to explore innovative solutions, refactor complex code, and support rapid prototyping in R&D contexts.
- Knowledge of Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems and experience with EUROCONTROL’s Network Manager systems would be an asset.

Contract staff engaged for a determined period
- Retain their current type of contract duration.
- Continue under their existing contract duration, as contract durations are not cumulative.
- The duration of their contract will therefore not restart upon selection to the new post, i.e. the remaining duration of their current determined contract continues to apply.
- Renewal(s): This contract may be renewed several times, but its total duration, including all renewal periods, may not exceed nine (9) years.
- Conversion: Conversion to an undetermined duration contract is possible where all of the following cumulative conditions are met: the post is confirmed as being of a lasting nature; the staff member has completed at least five years of service; the staff member’s performance has been satisfactory; and the conversion is in the interests of the service. Conversion is therefore not automatic.
- Retain their current type of contract duration.
- If the assignment is extended, they will continue in the post in accordance with the applicable rules.
- If the assignment is not extended and/or the duties are not confirmed as being of a lasting nature, they will be transferred to another post corresponding to their previous generic post, job level, and function group.
- The selected candidate must successfully complete a probationary period of nine (9) months before being established in the post.
- The selected candidate shall be engaged in principle at the basic grade of the advertised grades.
- Candidates declared suitable who are not selected for the post will be placed on a reserve list for similar roles. The reserve list will be valid for one year from the closing date of applications.
