The Role
At Last Mile Health (LMH), we make bold commitments that inspire innovation. Do you enjoy building applications using data and AI to solve real-world health challenges? If so, you may be our next Senior Engineer, AI & Digital Health.
Last Mile Health is expanding digital health systems across Ethiopia, Liberia, Malawi, Sierra Leone, and through Africa CDC partnerships. The Senior Engineer, AI & Digital Health will design and build AI-enabled systems that integrate health data platforms to improve how data is captured, processed, and used across health programs and support AI powered features for LMH’s programs. This role focuses on end-to-end AI and data application development, from user-facing interfaces to backend APIs, data integrations, and model deployment. The engineer will work across both frontend and backend tasks within a small, fast-paced development team serving multi-country and cross-cultural contexts.
This is a hands-on engineering role, a good match for someone who can work closely with end users to build scalable solutions in low-resource, multi-country environments. The ideal candidate is motivated to bring modern AI solutions into the hands of frontline workers and has experience integrating third-party APIs, deploying AI/LLM-powered features, and designing systems that are both technically robust and contextually appropriate and capable of reducing manual effort and operational burden. This role requires a strong commitment to reducing reporting burdens, improving data visibility, and strengthening the delivery of primary healthcare in underserved communities. Examples of problem areas this role may undertake include: reducing reporting burden through automation and intelligent data processing; improving supply chain visibility and forecasting through integrated data systems; strengthening disease surveillance through faster data aggregation and anomaly detection; or enabling more efficient data access and analysis for program and government teams.
This is a 24-month fixed-term contract with potential for renewal.
This role is based in Nairobi and is open to Kenyan nationals. The position will start as fully remote with a potential shift toward a hybrid or co-working environment in the future.
