Europe PMC is seeking an enthusiastic and creative Outreach and Engagement Officer to join the Literature Services team at EMBL-EBI. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in connecting the global research community with one of the world’s leading open science resources.
Europe PMC provides free and open access to more than 47 million research outputs, including abstracts, full text articles, and preprints. Enriched with links to datasets, reviews and persistent identifiers - and supported by 35 international funders - it is a vital platform for advancing open science and accelerating discovery worldwide.
As the way researchers discover and interact with scientific literature is rapidly changing, particularly with the rise of AI tools, programmatic access, and text mining, this role will be instrumental in ensuring Europe PMC remains visible, relevant, and impactful. You’ll help shape how diverse audiences engage with the platform, from researchers and developers to text and data miners and agentic AI.
About the Role
As Outreach and Engagement Officer, you will drive engagement with key user groups and build meaningful relationships with stakeholders across the global research ecosystem. Working collaboratively with internal teams, funders, and external partners, you will deliver impactful communications, training, and outreach initiatives that support Europe PMC’s mission.
This is a varied and dynamic role, involving everything from social media campaigns and content creation to delivering training and representing Europe PMC at events. You will also stay informed about emerging AI tools and trends, ensuring our engagement approach evolves alongside changes in the research landscape.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Deliver the Community Engagement Strategy through day-to-day outreach activities
Manage social media channels and develop targeted communication and campaign plans
Create engaging content, including articles, blog posts, posters, presentations, training materials, and short videos
Plan and deliver training sessions for key user groups and stakeholders
Develop and maintain webinars and on-demand training resources
Organise and support events, workshops, and conferences (virtual and in-person)
Monitor and evaluate engagement KPIs across communications, content, and training activities
Gather and share user feedback to inform Europe PMC’s strategic development
Build and maintain collaborative relationships with partners, including publishers, institutions, and open science organisations
Contribute to website content and provide input on design and user experience
Prepare and deliver presentations, and support colleagues in creating impactful materials
Work closely with the Funder Liaison Officer to align engagement and communication efforts
You Will Have
A degree or equivalent experience in Communications, Information Science or Life Sciences
Experience of working within a communications or engagement or marketing role, within a research, scientific publishing, open science, or academic context
Experience engaging with different stakeholders and user communities
Planning and delivering effective communication or promotional campaigns and measuring their success
Leading engagement via social media channels
Developing and delivering training for different audiences
Monitoring and reporting on engagement metrics or KPIs
Hands-on experience working in life sciences research or a scientific publishing domain
Using social media tools, online training platforms or webinar/virtual meeting software
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to deliver messages to a range of audiences
You May Also Have
Experience writing content with scientific or technical subject matter
An interest in or awareness of open science or how AI is changing the research landscape
Familiarity with AI tools relevant to communications work
Data analysis experience
Image/video editing software experience
Contract length: 3-year fixed term contract
Salary: Grade 5 monthly salary starting at £3,303 per month after tax but excluding pension and insurance contributions. Plus, generous benefits.
