Internships

The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year. The internships are awarded to persons studying towards a university degree or who have recently received a degree (see Internship web pages for further details).

The purpose of the programme is:

  • To provide interns with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies or interests, and expose them to the work of the IAEA and the United Nations as a whole;

  • To benefit the IAEA's programmes through the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields.

The duration of an internship is normally not less than three months and not more than one year.

Organizational Setting

The Division of Energy Planning, Information and Knowledge Management comprises the Planning and Economic Studies Section, Nuclear Knowledge Management Section, the Nuclear Information Section and the Nuclear Support Systems Group. The Division is responsible for strengthening capacities in energy and nuclear power planning, building capacities to manage nuclear knowledge and provide knowledge management services to interested member states, and to procure and provide printed and electronic information in the area of nuclear science and technology.

The Planning and Economic Studies Section has two objectives. One objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to perform their own analyses related to electricity and energy system development, energy investment planning and energy–environment policy formulation and to understand the associated economic implications. The other objective is to improve understanding of the potential role of nuclear energy to mitigate climate change, contribute to sustainable energy development and to security of energy supply.

Main Purpose

The Purpose of the internship is to support the IAEA's work on positioning nuclear energy within emerging low‑carbon financing mechanisms and carbon market frameworks. This includes analytical and technical contributions to the development of methodologies, regulatory approaches and instruments that enable nuclear technologies to participate in carbon markets, Article 6 of the Paris Agreement mechanism, sustainable taxonomies, and energy attribute certificate systems.
The internship will provide hands‑on experience at the intersection of law, policy, finance and energy systems, with a focus on how nuclear energy can be effectively recognized within global and regional mechanisms that support the energy transition.

Functions / Key Results Expected

Depending on the profile of the selected intern, the tasks could include inter alia:

  • Support analytical work on the inclusion of nuclear energy in carbon market mechanisms, including compliance markets, voluntary markets and other carbon trading frameworks.

  • Contribute to research on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, including examining regulatory and institutional developments relevant to cooperative approaches, analysing legal and methodological requirements applicable to emission‑reduction activities, mapping opportunities for nuclear participation in bilateral or multilateral Article 6 arrangements.

  • Assist in reviewing and comparing sustainable finance taxonomies, focusing on how nuclear energy is treated within eligibility criteria, technical screening requirements and disclosure obligations.

  • Monitor regulatory and policy developments related to low‑carbon financing instruments, carbon accounting standards, and market infrastructure relevant to nuclear energy.

  • Assist in preparing background notes, presentations, and technical summaries for internal discussions, expert meetings, and engagement with Member States.

  • Support the organization of workshops, consultations and expert dialogues, including drafting agendas, preparing materials and coordinating inputs.

  • Provide general analytical and administrative support to ongoing initiatives on sustainable finance, carbon markets and nuclear energy's role in the energy transition.

Qualifications and Experience

  • University Degree in law, finance, environment, social sciences, policy, international relations, economics.

  • Experience in Nuclear Energy System Assessment Methods, Nuclear Energy System Economic Analysis, or Nuclear Energy System Modelling and Analysis is an asset.

Applicant Eligibility

  • Candidates must be a minimum of 20 years of age and have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a first degree.

  • Candidates may apply up to one year after the completion of a bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree.

  • Candidates must not have previously participated in the IAEA's internship programme.

  • Good written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian) an asset.
