The Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities. Interns must be between 20 and 36 years old and should have less than two years of relevant working experience. 

 
In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

 
a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;
b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organisations, and/or for whom an internship is required to complete their studies; or
c) are sponsored by governmental/non-governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
d) are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.
e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.

 

Background Information

This opportunity is exclusively open to internationals, and the Intern position will be performed remotely.

The Migrant Protection Unit focuses on providing assisted voluntary return and reintegration (AVRR) for Iraqi returnees, whilst in parallel, conducting counter-trafficking interventions focused on providing protection and assistance for victims of trafficking. MPX interventions include case management, direct assistance, awareness information sessions, community-based activities, voluntary return, reintegration and more, depending on the needs of the individual.  

Responsibilities

Supervision
Under the general guidance of the Deputy Chief of Mission, the overall supervision of the Head, Mobility Pathways and Inclusion Division  (MPI), and the direct supervision of the Protection Coordinator, the successful candidate will support the Migrant Protection (MPX) Unit in the return & reintegration, and counter-trafficking programmatic interventions in Iraq. The intern will identify research needs on human rights issues in Iraq, gather and summarise relevant reference documents, and contribute to the preparation of reports on human rights frameworks and protection concerns. Additionally, the intern will help prepare meetings with agendas and summaries, respond to information requests, and participate in relevant forums.
  • Draft and/or conduct initial review of talking points, donor reports, concept notes, and other essential documents developed by the team.

  • Support in the development of an MPX brief showcasing its interventions.

  • Identify the latest internal and external referencedocumentson migration and human trafficking issuesrelevantto the MPX programmingandprovidesummaries andrelevantreferences in media, reports and briefs. This may include providing short briefing sessions to the MPX team.

  • Conduct research on labour migration trends and ethical recruitment practices in the region and draft reports to share with the Protection Coordinator. 

  • Conduct research and map community-based organisations (including faith-based organisations etc.) that are supporting foreign migrants in Iraq and prepare a report for the Protection Coordinator.

Learning Objectives
  • Strengthen ability to produce high-quality policy and donor-facing documents, including talking points, concept notes, and analytical briefs aligned with IOM’s protection and migration frameworks.

  • Develop analytical and research skills on migration dynamics, human trafficking, labour migration trends, and ethical recruitment to inform evidence-based programming.

Training Components and Learning Elements
  • Practical drafting and review exercises of donor reports, talking points, and concept notes with structured feedback from senior staff.

  • Guided research assignments on trafficking, labour migration, and ethical recruitment, including use of internal IOM resources and external evidence bases.

  • Hands-on development of programmatic outputs, such as MPX briefs, stakeholder mapping reports, and analytical summaries for internal use.

  • Exposure to real-time programme implementation, including how evidence informs protection interventions and donor engagement.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • Be enrolled in a Master’s Degree in international law or social sciences, or have graduated with a Master’s Degree, and if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation.

Experience

  • Experience studying and/or working on migration, human rights, and trafficking in persons. 

  • Expertise in drafting clear, concise, and well-organized reports, policy papers, and other written materials, utilizing strong analytical and writing abilities.

  • Proven ability to manage remote work effectively and maintain collaboration across virtual teams.

  • Experience delivering high-quality outputs within set timeframes, demonstrating excellent time management and ability to prioritize tasks under tight deadlines.

Skills

  • Strong understanding of migration, human rights, and trafficking in persons

  • Excellent analytical and writing skills, including the ability to write content in a concise and clear manner

  • Quantitative and qualitative research skills are an advantage

  • Ability to work effectively, harmoniously, and independently in a remote working setting

  • Great attention to detail and ability to organize

  • Ability to produce quality work according to set deadlines

Languages

For this internship, fluency in English is required (oral and written).

Fluency in Arabic is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Notes

Depending on experience and location, interns are granted a small monthly stipend to help offset costs. Interns benefiting from an internship allowance or scholarship granted by their university or other sponsoring body that includes financial remuneration or credits for coursework will not be eligible for the stipend.

IOM covers Interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the internship. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
