Area Manager*
in Tawila, North Darfur
The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract duration of one year. There are very good prospects for an extension. Employment location will be Twalia, North Darfur, Sudan (SD).
As Area Manager, you will lead and oversee WHH’s program implementation and operations in a challenging and complex humanitarian context, ensuring the effective, timely, and high-quality delivery of interventions across sectors including food security, nutrition, WASH, and cash-based assistance. You will operate within a multi-donor environment and collaborate closely with a wide range of national and international partners.
You will drive strong coordination with internal teams, local stakeholders, and humanitarian actors, while securing and maintaining access in a volatile setting with difficult living conditions. In doing so, you will ensure compliance with diverse donor and organizational requirements, strengthen community engagement and acceptance, and contribute to the strategic development and readiness of WHH’s emergency response.
Your responsibilities
- Actively participate in the North Darfur Humanitarian Coordination Forums, ensuring WHH’s programmes are aligned with national and international humanitarian strategies.
- Maintain effective working relationships with the relevant authorities to ensure compliance with regulations governing NGO operations.
- Monitor security dynamics, including armed conflict and movement restrictions, guide access negotiations with authorities and community leaders to facilitate safe and timely delivery of WHH interventions.
- Strengthen collaboration with community-based organizations, traditional leaders, and civil society groups in Darfur to ensure culturally appropriate programming and community acceptance of WHH interventions.
- Work with the Emergency Response Coordinator and Heads of Programs to develop and maintain contingency plans for conflict-related displacement, natural disasters, and sudden-onset crises, ensure readiness of staff and resources for rapid humanitarian response.
- Represent WHH to donors during field visits. Support programmes department in proposal development and reporting. Support timely submission of donor reports, WHH internal reports, and situation updates.
- Support effective implementation of WHH projects in food security, livelihoods, WASH, MPCA and humanitarian response.
- Monitor project quality, compliance with donor requirements, and alignment with Sudan Country Programme priorities.
- Be the link between all departments and provide timely updates on programme progress, challenges, and contextual developments
- Oversee recruitment, training, and mentoring of staff in Darfur, ensuring compliance with Sudanese labor law and WHH policies.
- Contribute to WHH advocacy and communications strategic objectives.
- Uphold accountability to affected populations through transparent communication and effective feedback mechanisms.
Your profile
- Technical college degree or bachelor’s degree in relevant field.
- Minimum 5 years’ professional experience in humanitarian or development programming in conflict/post-conflict settings, preferably Sudan or similar contexts.
- Ability to operate in remote, insecure environments with limited infrastructure; ability to cope in tropical and semi-arid climates.
- Strong teamwork and intercultural competence, with experience working in cross-cultural contexts.
- Negotiation and conflict resolution skills in multi-stakeholder settings involving authorities, armed actors, and communities.
- Proven experience in disciplinary leadership of staff across multiple projects in complex environments.
- Independent performance of tasks within defined scope of action and decision-making, with flexibility to adapt to rapidly changing humanitarian contexts.
- You recognize the growing value of data within an organization and inspire teams to make decisions grounded in analysis and evidence
- Fluency in English required; Arabic language skills (spoken/written) highly desirable, French would be an asset
