Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Established in April 2012, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has a membership of over 150 Governments (see www.ipbes.net) and seeks to respond to the needs of governments and other stakeholders to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Under the direct supervision of the Spatial Planning Assessment Technical Support Unit and the IPBES Programme Management Officer. To contextualize and synthesize the information to be included in the figures, the consultant is expected to travel to and participate in the following meetings: • Second meeting to advance the summary for policymakers to be held in August 2026 • Third meeting to advance the summary for policymakers to be held online in early 2027 • Thirteenth session of IPBES Plenary (IPBES 13), likely to be held in the second half of 2027
Qualifications/special skills
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in environmental science, biology or ecology, data science, information technology, graphic design or a related field, with understanding of methods and technologies to biodiversity monitoring is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. • 2 years experience in data visualization, preferably related to environmental science, biology or a related field are required; • Excellent knowledge of IPBES, biodiversity and environment-related matters is required; • Excellent knowledge of IPBES stakeholders and their information needs is required; • Demonstrated experience working with global or national assessment processes such as those of IPBES and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is required; • Demonstrated experience visualizing data and communicating complex information to a variety of audiences is required; • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to develop figures in English are required; • Good organizational and personal management skills, with ability to prioritize work issues to meet deadlines with minimal supervision and adjust to changing situations while maintaining focus on delivery and follow-through are required;
