Duties and Responsibilities

The Office of the Under-Secretary-General (OUSG), Department of Operational Support (DOS), directly supports the Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support in his engagements and decision-making, including strategic leadership and internal governance of the department. OUSG Environment Section coordinates the work of DOS to support effective environmental management across the UN Secretariat, including through engagement with Member States and other stakeholders, with a particular focus on performance and risk in peace operations through the pursuit of "The Way Forward: Environment Strategy for Peace Operations: 2030". The Environment Section is mandated to support environmental risk and performance management throughout field missions. Under the supervision of the Chief Environment Section in the office of the USG Department of Operational Support (DOS), the consultant will support deliverables related to the implementation of the DOS Environment Strategy for Peace Operations in field mission, including: • Develop draft guidance materials on positive legacy planning in peace operations, including templates for pilot use by missions. • Support missions in developing preliminary positive legacy plans, further to requests from the General Assembly that progress is made on this. • Review existing guidance documents to ensure that positive legacy considerations are integrated. • Respond to mission queries about implementing positive legacy mandates, e.g. use of tools and templates, integrating existing systems, and data collection. • Aggregate and analyses environmental performance data from clients in relation to positive legacy. • Attend meetings, conferences and other events related to his/her assigned area of work. Prepare written summaries of meetings and assist with follow-up actions, as appropriate. • Draft, coordinate and review reports, background papers, presentations, talking points, speeches and other official correspondence, including notes, code cables, notes verbales, memos and faxes, where relevant to deliverables. • Support preparations for official meetings, including drafting of background papers, communications to participants and official meeting reports as relevant. • Liaise with environmental focal points in UN Secretariat’s entities supported by DOS, and other UN departments, funds and programs on positive legacy as required. • Perform other duties as required, related to the deliverables.

Qualifications/special skills

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in renewable energy, environmental management, engineering, public policy or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in planning and execution of renewable energy projects, or in the broader environmental management field with a national government/administration, private company or international organization is required. Experience working on environmental management in the context of UN peacekeeping is required. Experience in evaluation of environmental compliance is desirable. Experience in coordinating projects with a wide-range of stakeholders is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
