Organizational Setting
The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) formulates and implements the IAEA's nuclear safety and security programme, which encompasses the IAEA's activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure, and responds to the needs of its Member States related to nuclear safety and nuclear security.
The Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety develops and maintains standards for radiation protection, radioactive waste safety, and safety in the transport of radioactive material that enable the beneficial uses of radiation to be exploited while ensuring appropriate protection of workers, the public, patients and the environment. It also assists Member States in the implementation of these standards and provides related services.The Radiation Safety and Monitoring Section is responsible for the delineation of an international programme to protect workers, patients and the public from all types of exposure to natural or artificial radiation, in line with the most recent scientific knowledge and information. The Section is also responsible for the provision of radiation safety technical services to staff members and experts who may be exposed to ionizing radiation as a result of activities conducted by the IAEA.
Main Purpose
Reporting to the Division Director, the Section Head is the manager and team leader of the Radiation Safety and Monitoring Section and is responsible for initiating, developing and implementing the IAEA's policy and programme on specific aspects of radiation protection, the radiological protection of patients, the radiological protection of workers and the IAEA's own Radiation Safety Technical Services as included in the IAEA's Radiation Safety Regulations. The Section Head leads the Section's activities in these areas to ensure the efficacy of the IAEA's programme on a global level and is responsible for the management of the Section's financial and human resources.
Role
The Section Head is: (1) a manager in a specialized, multilateral environment with diverse views on the issues, finding practical solutions and presenting arguments that can achieve results; (2) an adviser, providing analysis and background information to the Division Director on the formulation of strategies and policies related to the Section's technical responsibilities, and facilitating their implementation; (3) a managerial leader, planning, managing, coordinating and supervising the activities of the Section in accordance with IAEA policies and programmes and Member States' needs and ensuring that projects and activities are implemented and efficiently; (4) a promoter, conveying to multiple audiences the IAEA's vision and mission in this area; and (5) a facilitator of cooperation with other organizations and with other Departments in the IAEA dealing with this area of work and; (6) a leader, providing direction, promoting good performance and teamwork and creating an environment where staff can develop their skills and share knowledge and experience.

Plan, initiate, develop, implement, coordinate and supervise the activities of the Section.
Provide technical and managerial leadership, and plan, manage and lead the development, review and publication process for the Radiation Safety and Monitoring Section and the associated programme:
- general radiation protection activities including those related to radiation safety standards and to public exposure;
- radiological protection of patients;
- radiological protection of workers; and
- the IAEA's Radiation Safety Technical Services.
Analyse information and identify strategies to enhance the capability of the IAEA's radiation safety programme to address Member States' needs.
Analyse information and develop sustainable strategies for mandatory Radiation Safety Technical Services.
Lead the IAEA's activities related to supporting and further strengthening Member States' activities in the assigned technical areas, e.g. providing for the application of safety standards in Member States including the provision of technical support to the IAEA's TC programme with a view to establishing a harmonized approach at the international level.
Lead and actively contribute to divisional, departmental, and Agency-wide initiatives to enhance coherence, alignment, and synergy across related programmes of work.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills
Advanced university degree in engineering or physical/nuclear/radiological sciences. A first level university degree in engineering or physical/nuclear/radiological sciences plus two years of relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in radiation safety, of which at least eight should have been at a managerial level and concerned with standard setting.
Broad experience in the field with proven experience in managing professional and support staff.
Extensive experience of work at the international level, both in the development and in the application of safety standards.
Demonstrated experience in multilateral environments or competent authorities for radiation protection - such as regulatory bodies, national radiation protection institutes, or international standards-setting organizations is considered a strong asset.
Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
Remuneration
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $103165 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 55915, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; Other benefits include 6 weeks' annual leave, home leave travel, pension plan and health insurance.
