Duties and Responsibilities
Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 160 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with UN Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. This internship is located in the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), Regional Office for the Arab States, The Intern reports to the External Relations officer. The intern will support the team in the Policy & Foreign Affairs Research, Stakeholder & Actor Mapping Knowledge & Brief Development, and Monitoring & Analysis. Policy & Foreign Affairs Research • Conduct research and analysis on the policy priorities and positions of bilateral and multilateral partners in relation to disaster risk reduction, climate resilience, and related thematic areas. • Develop background briefs summarizing partners’ strategies, agendas, and areas of alignment with UNDRR. Stakeholder & Actor Mapping • Map existing and potential actors, including the private sector, philanthropy, and regional NGOs, to identify their roles and interests in resilience and risk reduction. • Maintain profiles of key stakeholders with relevant focus areas and priorities. Knowledge & Brief Development • Prepare concise background notes and briefs on partners’ policy positions and emerging trends. • Compile key information to support UNDRR’s engagement with governments, donors, and regional actors. Monitoring & Analysis • Track developments in foreign policy and donor strategies that influence regional priorities. • Provide short analytical updates to inform engagement approach Enter reporting line for Intern Rania Hammad, External Relations Officer Enter specific project or work area the intern will contribute to 1- Partnerships and Stakeholders engagement 2- Donor relationships 3- Regional Platform Enter specific tasks the intern will fulfil 1- Partnerships and stakeholder engagement: Supporting coordination with regional and national partners, including governments, UN entities, and private sector networks (e.g. ARISE). The intern will also conduct research and mapping of relevant stakeholders, partnerships, and initiatives in the Arab region to identify opportunities for collaboration and support the preparation of engagement briefs, background notes, and follow-up actions. 2- Donor relations: Assisting in the development of donor briefs, proposals, and communication materials, while conducting research on donor priorities, funding trends, and strategic entry points to inform resource mobilization efforts. The intern will support the identification of potential donors and contribute to the preparation of tailored outreach and reporting materials. 3- Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction: Contributing to the planning and organization of the Regional Platform, including coordination with partners and preparation of background documents. The intern will support research and analysis on key thematic areas, speakers, and regional priorities, as well as assist in drafting concept notes, session materials, and communication content, and supporting logistics and stakeholder outreach.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's degree or equivalent). • Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams; • Applicants must have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; • Applicants must have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views; • Ability to design surveys and polls is desirable.
Languages
• English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of Arabic is desired. • Official languages of the United Nations secretariat are: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish
