Internships
The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year. The internships are awarded to persons studying towards a university degree or who have recently received a degree (see Internship web pages for further details).
The purpose of the programme is:
To provide interns with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies or interests, and expose them to the work of the IAEA and the United Nations as a whole;
To benefit the IAEA's programmes through the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields.
The duration of an internship is normally not less than three months and not more than one year.
Organizational Setting
The Department of Safeguards carries out the IAEA's duties and responsibilities as the world's nuclear inspectorate, supporting global efforts to stop the spread of nuclear weapons. The primary role of the Department is to develop and implement IAEA safeguards to ensure that there is no diversion of declared nuclear material from peaceful activities and no indications of undeclared nuclear material or activities in a State as a whole.
The Department comprises nuclear safeguards inspectors, responsible for carrying out inspections and verifications of all-safeguards relevant information for nuclear facilities in over 180 States; and technical staff responsible for a wide range of activities including: developing concepts and approaches for implementing safeguards; developing and maintaining safeguards equipment; providing analytical and laboratory services for sample analysis; collecting, evaluating and analysing safeguards-relevant information; providing information and communication technology infrastructure and services; and providing programme coordination support.
The Division of Technical and Scientific Services ensures the provision of state-of-the-art equipment and related expertise for the accomplishment of the Department of Safeguards activities. Within this mandate, the Division is responsible for procurement, testing, provision, inventory control, performance monitoring and maintenance of safeguards equipment and supplies required by SGO Divisions; management of equipment development and engineering activities to meet quality and safeguards requirements; development and provision of documentation, procedures, instrumentation methods and techniques; provision of specialized technical and scientific support to inspectors and inspection activities in the field and at headquarters; and, radiation contamination monitoring of returned equipment and timely write-off of obsolete or contaminated equipment. The Division also coordinates departmental health and safety activities.

The Divisional Projects Team is seeking a Project Management intern to support the planning, coordination and execution of Safeguards projects, while contributing to continuous improvement of project management practices.
As an intern, you will work alongside experienced project managers, engineers, and technical specialists to support the planning, coordination, and monitoring of projects. You will gain hands-on experience in project documentation, progress tracking, stakeholder communication, and overall project organization.
You will also contribute to the continuous improvement of the Team's project management practices, helping streamline workflows and standardize project documentation, templates and tools to enhance efficiency and clarity, while building practical, real-world skills.
Functions / Key Results Expected
Support the planning, coordination and monitoring of projects.
Contribute to the development and improvement of project management tools, processes and templates for greater consistency, efficiency and quality.
Support the enhancement of dashboards to improve visibility of project progress, risks and deliverables.
Contribute to process optimization initiatives to streamline workflows.
Support knowledge-sharing activities, including the development and maintenance of guidance materials and documentation.
Contribute to team reporting activities and deliverables.
Support initiatives that strengthen team collaboration.
Qualifications and Experience
University degree in business administration, project management, engineering or a related field.
Understanding of project management principles and methodologies, with practical application of project management, programme management, and/or coordination concepts (e.g., through academic assignments or hands-on experience).
Experience with tracking project tasks, timelines and/or deliverables.
Ability to draft project reports, processes, structured documentation and/or presentations.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
Ability to communicate and present information clearly.
Proactive attitude with willingness to learn and take initiative.
Experience with project management tools (e.g., MS Project, Jira, or similar) and exposure to reporting and visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Excel, or similar) is desirable.
Experience with documentation and knowledge sharing tools (e.g. Confluence, SharePoint or other) is desirable.
Familiarity with results-based management concepts and tools (e.g. KPIs, dashboards) is desirable.
Basic understanding of process optimization concepts (e.g. lean thinking, continuous improvement) and familiarity with tools to document workflows (e.g. flowcharts) is desirable.

Exposure to risk management and basic skills in data analysis and reporting are desirable.
Applicant Eligibility
Candidates must be a minimum of 20 years of age and have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a first degree.
Candidates may apply up to one year after the completion of a bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree.
Candidates must not have previously participated in the IAEA's internship programme.
Good written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian) an asset.
Candidates must attach two signed letters of recommendation to their application.
