The Trade and Market Intelligence (TMI) section is part of the International Trade Centre’s Division of Market Development (DMD). It has developed a range of tools for strategic and operational market research, focusing on products and markets of interest to developing countries, assessing sectoral and national trade performance and trade competitiveness. In parallel to the development and implementation of its market analysis tools, TMI delivers trainings and capacity building programmes on market analysis and research for effective export marketing and strategy development. Drawing on the data and analytical indicators in the tools together with additional desk and empirical research, TMI also conducts studies and analyses tailored to the needs of trade policy officials in national ministries and trade support institutions focusing on strategies for improving trade competitiveness and identifying opportunities for product and market diversification. The goal of this job function is to provide analytical support to the section’s work on value chain diagnostics and prioritisation, in particular in the context of Africa.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Market Analyst and the general guidance of the Chief, Trade and Market Intelligence, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: Economic and/or sector analysis: •Collects, evaluates, interprets, analyses specified statistics and qualitative socio-economic information obtained from a variety of sources and pertaining to particular sectors, countries, regions or development topics, in particular the development potential of regional and global value chains with a focus on African economies. • Maintains databases and programmes for database management and organizes non-quantitative information. • Assists in the design, testing, operation and modification of econometric models, indicators and other quantitative methods, in particular related to value chain participation, trade flows, product sophistication, market concentration, employment, environmental impact and others using international trade and production datasets, as well as other sources. • Prepares briefing notes, inputs to speeches and similar material on economic or sector issues in a form that is meaningful to non-specialists; • Prepares first drafts of sector, country or regional components of analytical studies on development issues and policies, in particular value chain diagnostic studies, integrating quantitative findings. • Assists in the organization and servicing of related missions and country consultations. Intergovernmental support: • Follows stakeholder meetings and prepares summary reports and similar material. • Assists in the organization of panels, round tables etc on value chain development issues. Technical cooperation: • Prepares documentation for technical cooperation programmes and projects. • Monitors, backstops and assesses the implementation of technical cooperation programmes and projects. General: • Performs other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the work unit’s services; • Undertakes on-the-job and other training activities, both internally and externally. • Contributes to the analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.

Education

An advanced level (Masters or equivalent) university degree in economics or related field. A first level university degree in the above subject or related field with an additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. A PhD in economics or related field is desirable.

Job - Specific Qualification

Successful completion of degree and/or non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years (four years with a first level degree) of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in development programmes or related area, with a focus on trade is required. A minimum one year of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable Experience with trade development projects is desirable. Experience with statistical analysis of trade-related data is desirable. Experience with quantitative analyses of value chains is desirable.
