POSITION SUMMARY

The position reports to the Head of Legal and is responsible for advising internal clients (staff from HQ, country offices and management)  on the legal implications of the organization’s operational and administrative activities to support achievement of GGGI’s 2030 Strategy while sustaining institutional integrity.  The position handles tasks independently with limited supervision.

PURPOSE
  • Provides legal advice on the full range of administrative, contracting, operational and policy issues. 
  • Drafts, reviews and supports negotiation of institutional agreements with governments and other institutions, such as memoranda of understanding, project implementation agreements, funding agreements and non-disclosure agreements.
  • Drafts, reviews and supports negotiation of contracts relating to procurement of goods, works and services.
  • Advises on application and interpretation of the organization’s legal instruments, such as the charter document, Staff Regulations, Staff Rules and other internal regulations, rules and policies. 
  • Supports the development and revision of administrative and operational policies and internal rules and regulations.
  • Prepares standard templates for agreements, contracts and other legal instruments.
  • Provides advice and support on membership and privileges and immunities related issues.
  • Provides support on conducting due diligence assessments.
  • Provides support on managing claims and disputes.
  • Undertakes any other tasks assigned by the Head of Legal.

 

ENGAGEMENT
  • Engages directly with internal clients (staff from HQ, country offices and management) to provide advice and support on the legal issues pertaining to specific organizational activities and country operations. Engages with external parties on legal matters ensuring that the organization’s interest is protected and risks are minimized.
  • Engages with external counsel as required to ensure quality and timeliness of delivery of legal services.
DELIVERY
  • Timely provision of  legal advice  to facilitate operational and administrative activities while sustaining institutional integrity. 
  • Demonstrates  sustainment of high ethical standards in all operational and administrative activities. 
REQUIREMENTS
QUALIFICATIONS
  • University degree in Law (LLB, JD, LLM, or equivalent);
  • At least 2 years of international work experience (working in a location other than home country. A requirement for international salary scale eligibility)
  • Admission to a national bar or equivalent qualification to practice law;
  • 6 to 8 years of professional legal experience in an international organization, international law firm, or in-house legal department of a multinational corporation;
  • Excellent command of English (written and spoken);
  • Experience in employment law or HR-related legal issues is a plus; and
  • Experience working in an international organization is a plus.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The Senior Legal Counsel is an G9 grade level in GGGI's International Position Scale. Determination of base salary is subject to candidate's experience, academic background and internal equity. GGGI provides 15% of base salary towards retirement plan/long-term savings, 27 days of annual leave, and private health insurance that covers dental and vision with an expatriate benefit upon the eligibility of selected candidate.
