Join our team! The Aid Organization Diakonia is looking for a Communications Advisor based in Nairobi to strengthen our Global Communications Team, spread across four continents. The Communications Advisors at Diakonia have a global scope and play a key strategic role in shaping narratives, supporting decision-making and developing Diakonia’s communications work. Each advisor is responsible for one or several areas of global communications work. The scope of the role can include a thematic area, a geographic area, and/or specific channels or target groups.

The Global Communications Team works on both a strategic and an operational level. We drive, produce and support all communications work throughout the organization at country, regional and global level, while also working strategically to strengthen Diakonia’s brand, visibility and positioning in prioritized contexts. The team works closely with program teams in different contexts and global teams to build program communication, fundraising communication, advocacy communication, knowledge management and communication for resource mobilization work, and more.

For this specific role we are looking for someone with strong contextual knowledge of development work at national and regional level in Africa, including the following countries:  the Democratic republic of Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Somalia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is also preferable if you have experience in communication for Resource Mobilization, for Knowledge Management and/or Advocacy, as well as hands-on skills like photography, graphic design and social media work.

Key areas of responsibility

•    Develop, coordinate, implement and follow up the communications strategy and/or plans for your designated areas, in line with Diakonia’s global communications strategy and other relevant steering documents. 
•    Act as a strategic advisor to program teams and colleagues, contributing with analysis, guidance and communication solutions that strengthen program impact and positioning.
•    Lead and coordinate the communications work in the designated channels, thematic and/or geographic area, in collaboration with Team Leader and Director.
•    Shape and drive impactful storytelling, amplifying partner voices, simplifying complex issues, and contributing to narrative change in line with Diakonia’s rights-based approach.
•    Perform day-to-day communications tasks within the designated area, such as writing articles, interviewing, producing units for social media, managing photos and so on.
•    Designated areas divided amongst the Communications Advisors are for example branding and visibility, internal communications, advocacy communications, communications for resource mobilization, communication support to program offices, web site management, social media, graphic design and photography.

Additional tasks

•    Monitor and analyze developments within the area of expertise. 
•    Contribute to the strategic direction of Diakonia’s global communications work.

Required qualifications

•    University degree in communications, media or similar
•    At least five years’ experience of communications work in an NGO or similar
•    Strong contextual knowledge and analytical understanding of political, social and development dynamics in the relevant regions
•    Proven ability to work with advocacy, program communication and/or resource mobilization communication
•    Advanced English – writing and speaking
•    Proficiency in Microsoft 365, web editing tools and other programs relevant to the designated areas. 
•    Photography skills at an intermediate level or higher

Desired qualifications

•    Additional language skills in French, Swahili, Swedish or other
•    Image and video editing
•    Graphic design
•    Experience in managing social media channels
•    Experience in media relations

Employment type: Fixed-term contract, at least 2 years with possible extension.
