Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the Director-General of UNON is the representative of the Secretary-General in Kenya. UNON supports programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the Resident Coordination System (RCS) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, security, conference and, information services (www.unon.org). This internship position is based in the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), Division of Administrative Services (DAS), within the Information and Communication Technology Service (ICTS), Information Security. Under the direct supervision of the Information Security Team lead, the Intern will assist with: (A) Information & Cyber Security Operations (90%) 1. Security Operations & Incident Response • Assist in monitoring security dashboards (SIEM, EDR, and Firewalls) to identify potential threats or anomalies. • Assist in the initial triage of security alerts and the escalation of high-risk incidents to senior analysts. • Assist in the analysis of reported phishing emails and suspicious files using sandbox environments. • Assist in documenting incident timelines and preparing post-incident reports. 2. Vulnerability & Risk Management • Assist in conducting regular vulnerability scans across the network and application layers. • Assist in the tracking and verification of security patches and system updates across the enterprise. • Assist in performing security configuration audits against Secretariat policies and standards 3. Governance, Awareness, and Training • Assist in the development and delivery of security awareness materials for staff. • Assist in the coordination and analysis of internal phishing simulation exercises. • Assist in reviewing and updating Information Security policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). • Assist in performing user access reviews to ensure compliance with the principle of least privilege. (B) Infrastructure & Physical Security (10%) 4. Network & Wireless Infrastructure • Assist in the configuration and secure deployment of Wi-Fi Access Points, ensuring proper encryption and SSID isolation. • Assist in preparing and updating network schematics, diagrams, and technical documentation. • Assist in the secure decommissioning of ICT equipment, ensuring data destruction protocols are met. • Assist in communicating effectively with site supervisors regarding any infrastructure issues requiring information security intervention.

Qualifications/special skills

• Completion of undergraduate studies in Information Technology or related field. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. • Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
