We are seeking to fill the position of Site Maintenance Assistant G4, based in the MSD Division at the World Food Programme Headquarters in Rome, Italy.

THE ROLE

 

The Site Maintenance Assistant position is part of the GHQ Facilities and Projects Unit and will be expected to provide a full range of skillful site maintenance services including installation, maintenance and repair of electrical equipment/appliances to support safe, comfortable and reliable working environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (not all-inclusive, nor exhaustive):

  • Plan, coordinate, and provide civil maintenance works, including preventive interventions such as painting, masonry, plasterboard/partition installation, flooring, carpentry, furniture assembly and repair, and small blacksmith works, ensuring functionality, safety, and quality standards are maintained.

  • Coordinate and monitor portering and cleaning services (cleaning, gardening, pest control, waste management, etc.) to ensure organized, safe and clean work environment. Conduct regular inspections of the premises to verify the quality of services delivered by contractors and in‑house teams, identifying shortcomings and proposing corrective measures to maintain an organized, clean, and safe working environment.

  • Assist in maintaining accurate inventory records through physical checks and maintenance of lists/database, and arrange disposal of identified equipment and materials, strictly following WFP assets management guidelines.

  • Compile and provide accurate reports on works undertaken, services provided, materials procured and used for installations/repairs to support accurate accounting and enable efficient planning for future works/services.

  • Support the supervisor in evaluating installation/repair works and comparing prices of materials, and contributing to the planning of future preventive maintenance works to contribute to efficient and cost-effective site maintenance services.


OTHER POST REQUIREMENTS

  • Support deployment of and provide technical supervision to Building Maintenance Team, allocating tasks, guiding work methods, and ensuring timely and high‑quality completion of minor civil works and repairs.

  • Ability to intervene personally to adjust or complete the work of external contractors whenever required to meet WFP quality expectations.

  • Strong knowledge of materials, methods and processes used to execute civil works.

 

Essential requirements:

  • Has practical experience in maintenance works, including painting, masonry, plasterboard/partition installation, carpentry, flooring, furniture assembly/repair, and minor blacksmith work, with the ability to ensure functionality, safety, and quality standards.

  • Has some experience in reporting and basic technical documentation.

  • Has some experience in coordinating and monitoring service contractors (cleaning, gardening, pest control, or similar facility management services), including inspections and quality/performance checks.

  • This position requires a good physical fit to lift and handle heavy items and work in all types of weather conditions, wearing protective clothing.

  • Fluent in written and spoken Italian.

 

Desirable requirements:

  • Ability to perform structured inspections of premises and civil works to assess service quality.

  • Some experience supervising or coordinating small teams, such as handymen, maintenance workers, or contractors.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:


Education: Completion of secondary school education. Completion of technical/vocational school or electrical certification is desirable.


Experience: Four or more years of progressively responsible and proven experience in planning and executing specialized electrical installations, maintenance and repair work, (including hands‑on execution of painting, minor construction, carpentry, plasterboard installation, plumbing basics, etc.) and at least one year at G3 level or equivalent.

 

Knowledge and skills:

  • Good knowledge of how to read and understand blueprints and technical diagrams.

  • Knowledge of safety precautions.

  • Ability to inspect and evaluate equipment/appliances and resolve malfunctioning quickly including ability to perform tests and use the results to diagnose problems.

  • Ability to carry out installation of the equipment/appliances expertly and sometimes under difficult and awkward physical circumstances.

  • Ability to use hand and power tools.

  • Ability to multi-task and respond simultaneously and in a timely fashion to job requirements.

  • Ability to maintain accurate and precise records.

  • High sense of responsibility and punctuality.

  • Honesty and integrity.

  • Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing and draft various correspondence.

  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment.

  • Ability to work in a team and provide technical supervision to other staff.

 

Language: Intermediate Knowledge (level B) in English language is required.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS


Please note that this is a local recruitment for a General Service Staff position; therefore applicants must:

a) be Italian citizen, or non-Italian citizen holding a valid legal permit to live and work in Italy; and

b) reside within commuting distance (100 km or 1.5 hours travel time) of the duty station in Rome, Italy (Via Cesare Giulio Viola, 68, 00148), or already live in the country and be willing to relocate to Rome at their own expense before taking up the assignment. Preference will be given to candidates who already reside within commuting distance of the duty station. Please note that WFP will not cover relocation or living expenses and will not provide assistance in obtaining and extending residency status or work permits.


WFP offers a competitive compensation package, determined by the contract type and the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience.
