Context

The advertised position is located in the UNDSS Global Security Information Centre (GSIC), Division of Field Operations (DFO). The incumbent will be part of the team mandated to provide UNDSS leadership with a 24/7 common situational awareness overview to support coordination and operational planning and facilitate crisis management. The GSIC provides decision-making support to UN senior leadership and global situational awareness. The Center is an integrated information and crisis hub providing cross-pillar analytics, situational awareness, and support to risk and crisis management. Its products support senior-level decision-making and information sharing across the UN Security Management System, UNSMS.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Global Security Information Centre (GSIC), the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

Global Security Monitoring and Information Management:

•Serve within the UNDSS GSIC, a 24/7 operation, supporting the receipt, review, verifi-cation, and dissemination of information and reports from UN field locations worldwide.

•Assist in maintaining situational awareness by monitoring incoming reports, alerts, and open‑source information relevant to UN security operations.

•Alert on emerging threats, incidents, and security developments affecting UN person-nel, premises, and operations worldwide.

•Support information management functions by organizing, categorizing, and updating incident data, ensuring accuracy and consistency in accordance with UNDSS stand-ards.

Communication and Liaison Support:

•Provide and ensure communications with UN Field Security Officers on a continuous basis.

Multimedia Production and Visual Communication:

•Support the design and development of security-related multimedia products, including visualizations, infographics, dashboards, maps, and other graphic products, ensuring that all products comply with UNDSS branding guidelines and data protection require-ments.

Crisis Response and Documentation Support:

•Provide substantive support during emergency and security crises, including hostage and other security incident management operations in support of the Crisis Operations Group (COG).

•Assist in maintaining accurate records of decisions, actions taken, and follow‑up measures during crisis response operations.

Data Analysis and Reporting Support:

•Develop and maintain a global security database used to track incidents, threats, and operational responses in support of regional and global UNDSS security operations.

•Conduct preliminary data analysis to identify patterns, trends, and risk indicators, sup-porting GSIC’s analytical functions and evidenceb ased decision making.

•Support the production of security-related analytical and structured IM outputs, includ-ing charts, infographics, trackers, dashboards, and maps, for both internal and external use.

•Provide inputs to the Division of Field Operations (DFO) for the preparation of periodic, ad‑hoc, and situation‑specific reports, estimates, and analytical products.

Other Support Functions:

•Perform other related tasks as required to support GSIC operational objectives, in line with the scope of the UN Volunteer assignment.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

•Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for in-stance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);

•Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;

•Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;

•Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publica-tions/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;

•Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;

•Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering:
