The CTBTO awards a limited number of internships to university students and recent graduates from diverse academic background. Its purpose is to provide a learning and development experience in a field related to the Commission’s activities specialized in various professional fields. Interns usually work on specific practical assignments. Opportunities for internships are available subject to the current needs of the individual divisions within the CTBTO. 

Organizational Background

The Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization with its headquarters in Vienna, Austria is the international organization setting up the global verification system foreseen under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), which is the treaty banning any nuclear-weapon-test explosion or any other nuclear explosion. The Treaty provides for a global verification regime, including a network of 337 stations worldwide, a communications system, an international data centre and on-site inspections to monitor compliance.

Organizational Setting

This position is located in the Recruitment and Staff Development Unit, Human Resources Services, Office of the Executive Secretary. 

Reporting Lines

Under the supervision of the Head, Recruitment and Staff Development Unit, and in close coordination with the Senior Human Resources Assistant, the intern will:

Duties and Responsibilities

Learning & Staff Development 

  1. Support activities related to staff learning and development initiatives, including the Learning Hub, LMS-related activities, and related resources;
  2. Assist in maintaining and updating learning and training materials, communications, and online content;
  3. Support the organization and coordination of virtual and in-person group training activities;
  4. Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing learning and training-related information and feedback;
  5. Contribute to the preparation of learning resources, career development materials, presentations, reports, and other staff development content;

Talent Acquisition Activities

  1. Support talent outreach and employer branding activities, including research, benchmarking, and preparation of related materials and communications;
  2. Assist with activities related to online career fairs, webinars, and other recruitment outreach initiatives;
  3. Contribute to initiatives aimed at attracting diverse and qualified candidate pools;

Other

  1. Participate in meetings, events, career fairs, and webinars, and assist with related logistical support, note-taking, follow-up activities;
  2. Support HR communications, intranet content, user guides, and HR-related documentation;
  3. Assist with HR digitalization, automation, AI-related initiatives, and process improvement initiatives and research related to HR policies and practices within the UN common system and other international organizations;
  4. Support the preparation of presentations, reports, and other HR-related materials;
  5. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education

  • The applicant must have completed at least two years of full-time study at a university or equivalent institution that will lead to the award of a degree in human resources management, business administration, social sciences, communications, marketing, law or related field;
  • Applications may be made up to two years after the completion of a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree;
  • Strong interest in Human Resources, particularly in Learning & Development, Talent Acquisition, staff engagement, or organizational development, is required;

Work Experience and Qualifications

  • Candidates for an internship must be at least 18 years of age and no more than 35 years of age;
  • No prior professional experience is required. Relevant professional experience or academic exposure to Human Resources is an asset;
  • Strong analytical, research, and strong written and verbal communication skills are required;
  • Willingness to learn, take initiative, and contribute proactively in a team environment;
  • Adaptability, reliability, and professionalism;
  • Familiarity and interest in AI-based tools, automation, or technology-enabled processes is an asset;
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required; experience with Microsoft 365 tools (e.g. Teams, SharePoint, Outlook) is an asset;
  • Knowledge of social media platforms and basic social media analytics is an asset;
  • Experience with website content management, basic design tools, or audio-visual editing is an asset;

Languages

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential;
  • Knowledge of other official CTBTO languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is desirable.
