Overview

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems.

CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.

At CHAI, our people are our greatest asset, and none of this work would be possible without their talent, time, dedication, and passion for our mission and values. We are a highly diverse team of enthusiastic individuals across 40 countries with a broad range of skill sets and life experiences. CHAI is deeply grounded in the countries we work in, with the majority of our staff based in program countries. Learn more about our exciting work: http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org

CHAI values diversity and inclusion, and recognizes that our mission is best advanced by the leadership and contributions of people with diverse experience, backgrounds, and culture.

Position Overview

CHAI is searching for a hands-on volunteer to join the AI Transformation team as a builder. This is a build-focused role. You’ll work directly with Claude Code and Claude Cowork to build AI tools for CHAI’s internal teams.

This role suits someone who learns by building and wants to ship things. The AI Transformation team is new, and you’ll be joining at an early stage.

Responsibilities

Build and ship

  • Design, build, and ship AI tools in Claude Code and Claude Cowork for CHAI’s internal teams.
  • Take tools through the full cycle from scoping to deployment.
  • Contribute to process overhauls in the teams the tools support.

Use case pipeline and prioritization

  • Partner with CHAI teams to identify, assess, and prioritize AI use cases.
  • Help maintain a clear pipeline from idea to shipped tool.
  • Inform build-vs-buy decisions: off-the-shelf, light customization, or custom build.

Tool evaluation and lifecycle

  • Contribute to feasibility assessments, tool evaluations, and phase-in/phase-out decisions.

Technical infrastructure and standards

  • Support IT collaboration on integration, maintenance, and scaling of shipped tools.
  • Help maintain reliability and data governance standards on shipped tools.
  • Document reusable components, prompt frameworks, and implementation patterns so each project starts from a higher base.
  • Track usage and impact of shipped tools.

Cross-team technical support

  • Support pilots and partner technically with the Innovation team.
  • Support training and enablement work led by the Ops AI role.
  • Any other task identified by the supervisor.
Qualifications
  • Current student or recent graduate.
  • Programming experience in Python or a similar language.
  • Hands-on experience with Claude Code, Claude Cowork, or other AI-native development environments.
  • Working knowledge of LLM APIs and prompt engineering, with a practical sense of what these tools can and can’t do.
  • Comfortable starting before every detail is clear.
  • Strong written and oral communication in English.
  • Detail-oriented and able to work independently.
  • Genuine interest in applied AI and in CHAI’s mission.

Advantages

  • Background in computer science, engineering, data science, or a related technical discipline.
  • Familiarity with version control (e.g., GitHub), code review, and basic testing practices.
  • Experience with RAG, embeddings, or other ways to ground LLM outputs in specific data.
  • Experience shipping a small project from idea to working tool. Personal projects count.
  • Interest in global health, international development, or mission-driven work.
