In July 2024, the World Bank Group launched the WBG Guarantee Platform (WB GP), a major upgrade to its guarantees business, that will deliver improved guarantee access through a unified team at MIGA as well as innovative new guarantee solutions. These new reforms will help position MIGA to achieve the goal of tripling annual guarantee issuance to $20 billion by 2030.
To meet this goal and maximize its development mandate, MIGA must stay focused on supporting the needs of WBG’s developing member countries, while complementing the activities of other public and private insurers. To further develop the Agency’s business and foster innovation in the WB Guarantee Platform across the World Bank Group Institutions in these core areas and to meet the evolving needs of investors in developing and emerging markets, MIGA’s FIG (Financial Institutions Group) Operations Department (MIGOP) seeks a Senior Trade Finance Officer with extensive sector experience in trade, commodity and supply chain finance sectors who will identify new business opportunities for the WB’s GP focusing in finding joint solutions (including with IFC) for clients leveraging in the guarantee products of IFC, MIGA and IBRD/IDA.
This position will be based in Washington D.C. The selected candidate will report to MIGA’s Financial Institutions Group Manager based in Washington D.C.
The Senior Investment Officer - Trade Finance is expected to:
• Apply a strategic understanding of Trade, Commodity, and Supply Chain Finance sectors to generate, structure, and deliver trade finance, commodity, and supply chain finance products and solutions for MIGA.
• Leverage knowledge of IFI trade finance programs, including those of IFC, EBRD, and MIGA, to inform deal structuring and client engagement.
• Manage a diverse portfolio of trade finance products and clients, navigating complex issues to deliver results across multiple market contexts.
• Build and maintain strong client relationships, serving as a trusted point of contact for existing and prospective clients.
• Identify emerging market trends and develop new business initiatives with a high probability of success, bringing innovative thinking to product and solution design.
• Engage across organizational boundaries, including within the WBG and with external counterparts, to advance transactions and resolve challenging situations.
• Share knowledge and contribute to institutional learning by participating in internal knowledge-sharing activities and external industry events.
• Evaluate and implement a range of products and approaches to optimize client delivery, maintaining a balance sheet-agnostic perspective.
Selection Criteria
• MBA or Master’s degree in Finance, Economics or related areas;
• Minimum 8 years of relevant experience in a bank, IFI such as IFC or other development financial institution with a strong existing network of relationships in the banking sector;
• Demonstrated knowledge in financial institutions, trade, commodity and supply chain finance, credit and risk management, corporate governance, international finance and development issues and market creation advisory work.
• Ability to represent WB Guarantee Platform externally and to develop and manage relationships with clients, government, media, and donors, and work collaboratively with the World Bank, other DFIs, and other industry stakeholders;
• Strong business development and client relationship skills, demonstrated network relevant for the team’s business, track record, and ability to focus on clients’ needs effectively; strong sense of service to clients and demonstrated business development aptitude; proven success in developing client relationships;
• Ability to develop innovative solutions and challenge the status quo to build the business;
• Excellent people management skills and openness to feedback; new ideas and ability to guide staff to solutions to problems;
