Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. The overall objective of the UNEP's Ecosystems Division is to support countries in conserving, restoring, and sustainably managing their terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems; the biodiversity they contain; and the products and services they provide for human well-being and prosperity. Focusing on tackling climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution across marine, coastal, and aquatic ecosystems, the Regional Seas Branch coordinates the Regional Seas Programme (RSP), covering 18 Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans (Regional Seas). These frameworks address the accelerating degradation of the world’s oceans and coastal areas while linking regional efforts with global processes, including the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ), and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This internship is hosted by UNEP’s Ecosystems Division in the Regional Seas Branch (RSB). Within the Regional Seas Branch, the intern’s responsibilities will support overall technical and coordination needs related to the implementation of the Branch’s projects and programmes, as well as assist in the coordination of the 18 Regional Seas. a. Monitor and review the implementation progress of RSB activities and projects, as well as the 18 Regional Seas activities related to the Regional Seas Coordination Project, and assist with monthly reporting and biannual reporting in the Integrated Planning Monitoring and Reporting (IPMR) system. b. Assist with the compilation of technical content for UNEP’s regular reporting on RSP activities (e.g., UNEA Resolutions, Programme Performance Reviews, Executive Director’s reports, UN General Assembly reports, or donor reports) by collecting and consolidating inputs from the 18 Regional Seas under the guidance of the supervisor. c. Assist with facilitating the submission of reporting, including following up on reporting requirements, templates, timelines, and other related requests. d. Track, maintain, and update reporting inputs and activity records from the 18 Regional Seas, based on the separate reporting requests, to provide to the RSB. e. Support the development of communication materials and collaborate with the 18 Regional Seas, relevant divisions, and partners to request and consolidate case studies, best practices, reviews, and other relevant materials. f. Provide administrative and logistical support to meetings, workshops, conferences, etc., including preparing background documents and presentations and taking notes as needed. g. Perform other duties to support the work of the branch, as requested and in accordance with the intern's interests.
