Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

Job Description

Introduction

During Long Shutdown 3 (LS3, 2026-2030), the ATLAS detector will be upgraded with new detector systems, requiring detailed engineering work to finalise their design, integration, installation sequence, and connection to services. This will involve substantial on-site activities. As a mechanical engineer, you will join the TC engineering team and serve as the interface between ATLAS Technical Coordination (TC) and the detector upgrade teams, particularly for critical mechanical integration activities.

Functions

  • Oversee the design of all mechanical aspects of a detector system, in collaboration with the worldwide institutes contributing to the production of deliverables.
  • Define and manage the mechanical interfaces between the ATLAS detector and its infrastructure, including supports and services. Supervise the production of 3D integration models and ensure that the relevant envelopes are properly taken into account.
  • Develop the transport and underground installation sequence, and design the associated installation tooling and its interfaces with the detectors.
  • Support the detector team in coordinating the production of mechanical components to help ensure their timely delivery and facilitate smooth assembly planning.
  • Participate in the assembly of the detectors inside the clean room.
  • Supervise the installation of service infrastructure, including cable trays and flexible chains, in the ATLAS detector environment and ensuring it is implemented in line with the detector commissioning needs.
  • Supervise the installation of the detectors inside the Experimental Cavern.

Qualifications

Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

Experience:

  • Solid experience in mechanical design, from 3D modelling to manufacturing drawings.
  • Proven expertise in installation of high-technology equipment, requiring accurate procedures and tooling.
  • Proven practice in mechanical calculations and Finite Element Analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience in writing installation procedures.
  • Experience in project management, including planning, procurement, and reporting to project management hierarchy.
  • Experience in coordination of designers and technicians.
  • Experience in performing a variety of engineering tasks, managing multiple projects in parallel, and working effectively within international and multidisciplinary teams would be an advantage.

Technical competencies:

  • Integration of mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of design codes and compliance verification of mechanical equipment.
  • Assembly and integration of infrastructure for detectors or experimental facilities.
  • Knowledge and application of numerical modelling in solid mechanics.
  • Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Achieving Results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations.
  • Demonstrating Flexibility: being willing to work on different projects simultaneously.
  • Solving Problems: identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them.
  • Working in Teams: gaining trust and collaboration from others.
  • Managing Self: taking initiative beyond regular tasks and making things happen.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.
