About the position
Project: Deploying Diversity for Resilience and Livelihood (A1697)
This consultancy covers an eleven (11) month period during which the consultant will coordinate and support the effective implementation of project activities in close collaboration with national and international partners.
Main responsibilities
Specific Terms of Reference include:
1. Project Coordination and Implementation
• Lead third-year activity planning with national partners, consolidate plans, and support implementation follow-up.
• Plan and execute project activities across sites in line with project documents.
• Coordinate fieldwork and ensure timely and effective activity delivery.
• Support partners in implementation and ensure accurate and efficient data collection.
• Compile and analyse data from partners and prepare quarterly and annual reports.
• Organize meetings and workshops as required.
• Develop communication materials (e.g., blog articles) under supervision.
• Contribute to scientific publications based on project data.
• Prepare the third-year final project report in consultation with the supervisor.
2. Cross Project Support
• Contribute to other Alliance projects as assigned by the supervisor.
3. Knowledge Products (10% LOE)
• Contribute to scientific papers and manuals on crowdsourcing, evolutionary plant breeding, and participatory varietal selection, allocating at least 10% of working time.
Requirements
Required Expertise
• Good experience working with farmers and engaging them in participatory crop improvement
• Skill and knowledge to design and implement participatory crop improvement
• Good knowledge and skill of data collection tools, data analysis and knowledge generation.
• Good skill and knowledge of environmental science and climate change impacts
Qualifications
• Advanced academic degree (PhD or MSc) in Environmental Science and Agriculture or closely related interdisciplinary field.
• Recognized scientific authority demonstrated through extensive published research or field-based engagement in crop improvement and environmental variables.
• High-level fluency in English to deliver complex technical and policy documentation.
Expected Experience
• Extensive applied scientific experience planning and implementing project activities in Ethiopia.
• Proven track record of working on evolutionary plant breeding, crowdsourcing and participatory crop improvement
• Long-standing engagement working with multinational institutions, government institutions, and local community stakeholders.
• In depth knowledge of plant diversity and ecosystem services.
• Good data management skills and archiving.
Reporting and Accountability
The Consultant will be reporting to the assigned Scientist in Agrobiodiversity lever in agreed arrangement.
