Contract Duration

Interns are required to work full time for a period of six months (to be agreed to prior to commencement).

The Opportunity

The International Criminal Court (ICC) investigates and, where warranted, tries individuals charged with the gravest crimes of concern to the international community: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and crimes of aggression. The Court is participating in the global fight to end impunity, and through international criminal justice, the Court aims to hold those responsible accountable for their crimes and to help prevent the crimes from happening again. You can contribute to this cause by joining the ICC.

Organisational Context

The International Criminal Court Staff Union Council is the sole representative body for the staff of the International Criminal Court. Through the Staff Union Council, staff members of the ICC can speak with one voice on issues relating to employment conditions and staff welfare.

The Staff Union Council is seeking a motivated intern with a strong interest in communications, storytelling, and digital engagement. This internship offers a hands-on opportunity to support how the Staff Union communicates with its members across multiple channels. You will play a key role in shaping clear, engaging, and accessible messaging for a diverse international audience.

Interns provide the Staff Union Council with assistance for a limited period (maximum 6 months) and will gain practical experience in their area of academic study. Applicants to the Staff Union Council will also be expected to meet the general eligibility requirements for participation in the Internship and Visiting Professional Programme.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Drafting communications (e.g., internal emails, announcements, newsletters, updates) for staff;
  • Drafting and editing written content for the Intranet website.
  • Assistance in the support of meetings and preparation of minutes and summaries to be taken;
  • Support the preparation of communication materials for meetings, campaigns, and events;
  • Assist in managing and updating digital communication platforms;
  • Contribute to visual content creation (graphics, basic layouts, or presentations);
  • Help documents outcomes of discussions, decisions, and initiatives;
  • Support storytelling through photography, short videos, or multimedia content where relevant.

Required Qualifications

Education:

All candidates must be a recent graduate or in the final stages of their studies at a recognised university. Candidates are expected to be currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Communications, Media, Journalism, Marketing, Web design, or in related areas.

Experience:

Internship placements focus on candidates in the early stages of their professional careers. Practical experience that is relevant to the work of the Staff Union Council may be considered an asset, but should not exceed 3 (three) years.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Able to adapt to multicultural and multilingual working environments.
  • Possesses strong teamwork skills (listens, consults and communicates proactively).
  • Strong writing and copywriting skills (clear, concise, engaging tone)
  • Familiarity with content creation tools (Cana, Adobe Photoshop or similar)
  • Interest or experience in photography and/or videography
  • Basic knowledge of web design or content management systems
  • Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to translate complex topics into accessible language

Knowledge of Languages:

Proficiency (written and spoken) in English, is required. Working knowledge of French and other UN official language of the Court (Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.

Remuneration

Please note that internship and visiting professional placements at the ICC are unfunded. The ICC is not able to provide participants in the Internship and Visiting Professional Programme with any remuneration, nor is it possible to provide reimbursement for expenses incurred prior, during or after the internship or visiting professional placement. Applicants must therefore be able to support themselves for the entire duration of their internship or visiting professional placement.
