We work in partnership to create an inclusive society for all.   To keep pace with the growth of the Nigeria Country Office, we are looking for a Programme Officer, WASH. The position is based in Sokoto and the position works 40 Hours/Week.
This position is only filled locally, with contractual conditions of the respective country. An expatriation is not intended.

These are your responsibilities

  • Oversee rehabilitation and/or construction of boreholes and water supply systems, ensuring quality and adherence to disability- inclusive technical standards.
  • Supervise latrine construction and rehabilitation, ensuring gender-sensitive, inclusive, and child-friendly designs (including accessibility for children with disabilities).
  • Ensure integration of WASH with Education in Emergencies approaches within schools. 
    Design and implement hygiene promotion campaigns targeting pupils, teachers, and communities.
  • Lead menstrual hygiene management (MHM) activities, including awareness sessions, dignity kit distribution, and establishment of supportive school environments.
  • Develop IEC materials and ensure culturally appropriate messaging.
  • Work with the Disability Inclusion Officer to ensure that all accessibility issues are fully considered and with the partners, ensure the participation of persons with disabilities in decision making about WASH issues.
  • Facilitate the formation and strengthening of school WASH clubs.
  • Train WASH club members on hygiene practices, peer education, and facility maintenance.
  • Ensure all infrastructure meets Sphere standards national WASH guidelines and ECHO requirements.
  • Monitor water quality and functionality of WASH facilities.
  • Engage School Management Committees (SMCs), Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), and community leaders to ensure sustainability of WASH facilities.
  • Collect and report data on WASH indicators in line with project logframe and ECHO reporting requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records of construction, rehabilitation, and hygiene promotion activities.
  • Document lessons learned, case studies, and success stories.
  • Ensure all interventions are gender-sensitive, inclusive, and protection-focused.
  • Promote safe access to WASH facilities for girls, especially regarding menstrual hygiene.
  • Adhere to safeguarding and child protection policies.
  • Ensure internal alignment with relevant stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with local authorities, education actors and WASH clusters/working groups.
  • Participate in coordination meetings and contribute to sectoral reporting.
  • Ensure alignment with government standards and policies.

These are your qualifications

  • University Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Health, Public Health, Water Resources, or related field.
  • A Master’s Degree/Relevant certifications will be an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in WASH programming, preferably in humanitarian settings.
  • Experience in providing support to local partners or working with donor organizations.
  • Prior experience with international development organizations or programs that have both national and community-level engagement.
  • Experience in project management, budget development, work-plan development,  borehole rehabilitation/construction and sanitation infrastructure, MHM and school-based hygiene promotion activities.
  • Fluency in oral and written communication skills; particularly in English language is a must.Knowledge of local language (Hausa) is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with ECHO guidelines, Sphere Standards, and humanitarian principles is an asset.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment while juggling and coordinating multiple/conflicting priorities and deadlines.
  • Microsoft Office Package (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint) and good report writing skills.
  • Ability to integrate into a multi-cultural environment.
  • Must be proactive, seeking to do things differently, and to solve problems effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability and willingness to learn and travel frequently to project locations.
  • Able to work independently, and as a member of a team.
  • Identification with Christian values and the mandate of CBM.
