To keep pace with the growth of the Nigeria Country Office, we are looking for a Safety and Security Officer.This position is based in Sokoto and the incumbent shall work for 40 Hours/week.
This position is only filled locally, with contractual conditions of the respective country. An expatriation is not intended.
These are your responsibilities
- Conduct regular security risk assessments across project locations, including schools and community learning centers.
- Monitor and analyze security trends (conflict, crime, community tensions) in Northwest Nigeria.
- Develop and update Security Risk Assessments (SRAs), contingency plans, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Provide timely security updates, advisories, and incident reports to project leadership.
- Ensure safe movement of staff through route planning, movement tracking, and journey management protocols.
- Conduct security briefings and debriefings for staff, visitors, and partners.
- Support safe access to hard-to-reach communities, especially for outreach to out-of-school children.
- Oversee security arrangements for field missions, trainings, and school-based activities.
- Promote a strong safety culture among staff and partners.
- Deliver regular safety and security trainings (e.g., personal safety, first aid awareness, incident reporting).
- Ensure staff understand and comply with organizational security policies.
- Provide guidance on stress management and psychosocial safety in high-risk contexts.
- Work closely with protection teams to ensure safeguarding and “do no harm” principles are upheld.
- Establish and maintain an incident reporting and tracking system.
- Lead initial response to security incidents and ensure proper documentation and follow-up.
- Liaise with relevant authorities, community leaders, and security actors when necessary.
- Support investigations into security incidents and recommend corrective actions.
- Build and maintain relationships with local communities, leaders, and stakeholders to enhance acceptance and access.
- Conduct context-sensitive conflict analysis to inform project implementation.
- Support negotiation of humanitarian access where needed.
- Advise on safe community engagement strategies to improve enrolment and retention.
- Ensure security of offices,and project assets.
- Monitor compliance with safety standards in WASH facilities and temporary learning spaces.
- Supervise guards and ensure effective access control systems.
These are your qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in security management, Social Sciences, International relations,or related field (Master’s degree is an advantage).
- Relevant security certifications are an added advantage.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in security management, preferably in humanitarian or NGO settings.
- Experience working in Northwest Nigeria or similar high-risk environments is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with Education in Emergencies, WASH, and protection programming.
- Experience in providing support to local partners or working with donor organizations.
- Fluency in oral and written communication skills; particularly in English language is a must. Knowledge of local language(s) is an advantage.
- Familiarity with ECHO guidelines, Sphere Standards, and humanitarian principles is an asset.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment while juggling and coordinating multiple/conflicting priorities and deadlines.
- Microsoft Office Package (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint) and good report writing skills.
- Ability to integrate into a multi-cultural environment.
- Must be proactive, seeking to do things differently, and to solve problems effectively and efficiently.
- Ability and willingness to learn and travel frequently to project locations.
- Able to work independently, and as a member of a team.
- Identification with Christian values and the mandate of CBM.
