The WBG’s Digital and AI Vice Presidency, which houses the Digital & AI industry expertise across the WBG, works to connect operational teams across the WBG and clients with effective public‑ and private‑sector solutions to address barriers to expanded internet access and usage in emerging markets. Its mandate is to deliver knowledge and solutions that enable the WBG to advance its mission. Within this structure, the Digital Access Solutions & Impact Department (WKDAX) focuses on building the foundations of digital economies by advancing quality, affordable, and safe digital infrastructure access and data & AI solutions, with the aim of delivering scalable development impact and creating more and better jobs. WKDAX team leads work on digital infrastructure and affordability, with a focus on knowledge generation, solution design, and the scaling of proven approaches across regions and country programs.
The WKDAX group is looking for an Investment Analyst to support the implementation of the Digital Access and Affordability sector’s investments and solutions work. The Investment Analyst will help to: (i) develop new business, execute transactions, and support portfolio investments across the globe; (ii) manage key global client relationships; (iii) prepare sector mappings, strategies, and management briefings; and (iv) further WBG’s expertise through benchmarking, analyzing industry trends, and tracking lessons learned and disseminating the same across the organization.
The Investment Analyst will work closely with sector and team leads, industry specialists, regional teams, and partners to support industry and market research The position will be based in Washington, DC. Some travel may be required.
Duties and Accountabilities:
The responsibilities of the Investment Analyst will include but are not limited to:
• Innovation & Structuring:
o Assisting in the design and implementation of innovative, replicable, and scalable investment, guarantee, and other solutions, deploying the WBG product suite to address barriers to expanded internet access and usage in emerging markets, in collaboration and coordination with other WBG teams and external partners.
o Assisting the identification of new approaches from partners, business models and financing structures, that can accelerate private sector participation and development impact.
• Investment Analysis & Execution:
o Assisting in screening and analyzing new business opportunities, including building, and reviewing financial models to assess investment projects' viability and employing other valuations methodologies to support investment analysis.
o Preparing investment proposal documents for senior management and credit, covering detailed assessment of risks and returns of the proposed investment.
• Market Research & Strategy:
o Conducting industry and market research including sector mappings, industry trends, financial and non-financial sector KPIs, and benchmarking performance of WBG’s Digital & AI investments.
o Contributing to the development and reporting of WBG’s Digital Access & Affordability sector strategy to WBG’s senior management and the board (including drafting PowerPoint presentations, reports, and participating in working groups).
• Business Development & Portfolio Support:
o Supporting team's internal analysis, marketing, and business development efforts, including preparing pitch books and presentations for clients and internal stakeholders.
o Monitoring Digital & AI portfolio performance to gauge profitability and impact for WBG in the sector by supporting client’s credit and integrity risk rating assessments per WBG’s standards and requirements.
• Knowledge Sharing & Collaboration:
o Organize webinars and conferences (including preparing presentations, marketing materials, etc.) and disseminate lessons learned.
o Work with WBG teams across regions and departments to support the design and implementation of innovative, replicable, and scalable investment, guarantee, and other solutions.
Selection Criteria
• A bachelor’s degree from a renowned university (preferably with a specialization in Finance, Business, or Economics).
• At least 2 years of relevant work experience at an international investment bank, commercial bank, private equity firm, consulting, or asset management firm. Previous exposure to the digital infrastructure, digital development or TMT sector is a plus.
• Strong quantitative/numerical skills with substantial experience in interpreting financial information and developing and analyzing excel-based financial models for debt and equity transactions.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills as well as sound business judgment to identify issues and present creative and practical solutions.
• Highly proficient in the use of Excel, PowerPoint, and Word (proficiency in the use of Bloomberg or Capital IQ is a plus).
• Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to work successfully in multicultural teams and across regions with demonstrated team spirit and responsiveness.
• Excellent presentation and teamwork skills.
• Strong organizational and time management skills with proven ability to work efficiently and autonomously under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; knowledge of other languages would be a plus.
• Keen interest in emerging markets, development, and Digital & AI sector.
• Highly motivated and proactive, committed to the highest ethical standards.
