Job Description

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Cameroon seeks to strengthen its Security Management System (SMS) in line with UNSMS and IOM global security compliance frameworks.
The mission operates in a context marked by:

  • Increasing security risks affecting staff movements and operations, particularly in the Far North, North-West, and South-West regions

  • The need to reinforce security risk assessments, mitigation measures, and compliance monitoring

  • Strengthening internal reporting mechanisms for incident reporting, PSEAH risks, and safety observations

  • The importance of enhancing staff preparedness through training, information dissemination, and emergency readiness

The Security team supports all IOM operations with a focus on ensuring safe, compliant, and effective programme delivery across Cameroon.

It is essential to reinforce the Security Team’s analytical, reporting, and operational capacities through the engagement of additional personnel, notably via a structured internship programme, to ensure continuity of operations, strengthened oversight, and sustained compliance with UNSMS and IOM security requirements.

Responsibilities

Objectives

The Security Unit is seeking a Security Intern whose overall objective is to support the strengthening of security risk management, compliance monitoring, and staff preparedness across IOM Cameroon offices.

Specific Objectives

1. Support to Security Risk Management (SRM)

  • Assist in the collection, analysis, and consolidation of security information from field offices

  • Support updates of Security Risk Management (SRM) measures, Mission Security Plans (MSP), and area‑specific security advisories

  • Participate in field risk assessments under the supervision of the Field Security Support Officer

  • Support follow‑up on compliance with SRM measures, including office assessments and site visits

2. Security Compliance and Safety Monitoring

  • Assist with security compliance checklists, including physical security, access control, fire safety, and staff safety equipment

  • Support in monitoring the implementation of UNSMS standards and SRM measures 

  • Contribute to tracking of corrective actions, non‑compliance, and audit recommendations

  • Support documentation of safety observations, workplace hazards, and corrective recommendations

3. Incident Reporting and Analysis

  • Support the compilation and analysis of security and safety incidents, including: 

    • crime, road incidents, threats, intrusion reports, and protection‑related incidents

  • Assist with the weekly and monthly security situation reports, maps, and trend analysis

4. Staff Preparedness and Training

  • Assist in organizing security briefings, warden system updates, fire drills, and emergency preparedness exercises

  • Help prepare awareness materials, such as safety posters, WhatsApp alerts, radio‑check reminders, and field mission guidelines

  • Support the development of learning materials for: 

    • Travel safety

    • Residential safety

    • Fire safety

    • SCAAN usage

5. Internal Documentation and Operational Support

  • Contribute to maintaining the Security SharePoint, including uploading advisories, templates, mission requests, and compliance tools

  • Support the preparation of CONOPS, staff movement tracking tools, and mission‑planning documents

  • Assist with documenting procurement needs for security equipment (CCTV, radios, PPE, access control)

Proposed Methodology

  • Desk review of security policies, UNSMS manuals, SRM templates, and IOM internal guidelines

  • Participation in security unit meetings and coordination with UNDSS, field staff, and programme teams

  • Field visits to IOM offices to support assessments and compliance checks

  • Compilation of data and analysis through interviews, observation, and document review

  • Preparation of dashboards, summaries, and reports

Expected Deliverables

  • Update Mission Security SharePoint content

  • Support to CONOPS drafting for field missions and high‑level visits

  • Documentation on corrective actions and follow‑up status

Duration and Indicative Timeline

Total period: 12 weeks

  • Phase 1 (Weeks 1–3): Familiarization, document review, baseline assessments

  • Phase 2 (Weeks 4–7): Field security assessments, compliance monitoring, incident reporting

  • Phase 3 (Weeks 8–10): Preparation of deliverables, training materials, analysis

  • Phase 4 (Weeks 11–12): Internal validation and finalization of outputs

Resources and Expected Support

  • Access to IOM security documentation, SRM tools, incident archives, and SharePoint

  • Facilitation of meetings and interviews with staff, UNDSS, and programme teams

  • Logistical support for field travel when required

  • Supervision by the Field Security Support Officer (FSSO)

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

The candidate should:

  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a Bachelor’s degree or Master’s level in Security Studies, International Relations, Political Science, Crisis Management, Disaster Risk Reduction, Public Administration, or any relevant discipline
  • OR be enrolled in a graduate programme (second university degree or equivalent)
  • OR have graduated within the past 12 months in one of the above fields

SKILLS

  • Basic understanding of security risk management, emergency preparedness, or safety principles
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and summarize information
  • Good knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word), mapping tools are an asset
  • Strong report writing skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work in sensitive contexts and respect confidentiality
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills
  • Ability to collaborate with diverse teams
  • Initiative, autonomy, and adaptability
  • Familiarity with humanitarian or UN systems is an advantage
  • Sensitivity to PSEAH principles, protection risks, and institutional neutrality

Languages

REQUIRED

The intern must be able to communicate in both English and French.
