Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global voice on the environment. It provides leadership and encourages partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations. The consultant will support ongoing programmes and projects of the Urban Food Systems team within the Subnational Climate Action Unit, Mitigation Branch, Climate Division of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in particular the activities on SDG 12.3 delivery. Mandated by UNEA Resolution, UNEP: • Fosters regional and global cooperation and facilitates exchange of experiences, knowledge, research and best practices among member states and stakeholders; • Provides technical support to member states; • Participates in international initiatives to share innovative practices; • And promotes food loss and waste reduction and supports countries, especially developing countries, upon their request, in exploring opportunities to collaborate with UN organizations and international financial institutions. This consultancy will support: • Operationalization of the Food Waste Breakthrough Roadmap for Technical Exchange, developing city and private sector capacity building and knowledge sharing on food waste prevention between Country Champions Brazil and Japan. • Day to day activities of the Initiative on Climate Action and Nutrition (I-CAN) • Fundraising, including initiation of new GEF Food Waste project and development of GEF country projects • One Planet Network Sustainable Food Systems Programme activities and events, including organization of MAC Meeting and Global Conference, support to Community of Practice on Food Systems on the Ground (CoP-FSAG). • Coordination services for the Food is Never Waste Coalition, including facilitation of meetings, outline and consultation on one year strategy, management of participant list, invitations and correspondence, support identifying and securing speakers, preparation of presentations. • Development of multi-stakeholder advocacy approach for International Day of Awareness on Food Loss and Waste, including coordination with partners, convening regular meetings, help drafting advocacy plan, and engaging partners for successful joint delivery. • Advocacy for other events such as International Day for Zero Waste and Climate and Biodiversity COPs. • Publication development and launch activities • Thought leadership on circular food systems in cities • Editing and updating of stopfoodlosswaste.org portal • Administrative and reporting processes
Qualifications/special skills
• University degree (Bachelors or equivalent) in food systems, environmental science or other relevant area. • A minimum of 1 year of previous working experience in research or programme coordination, preferably with a focus on food waste, circularity and cities. • Prior experience or exposure to working with UN agencies are desirable. • Demonstrated ability and knowledge in the coordination and implementation of food waste and urban food systems projects, including advocacy and fundraising. • A good understanding of the global food waste agenda, key stakeholders and global and regional processes is desired.
Languages
Fluency in written and spoken English is a requirement. Knowledge of Spanish, Portuguese or Japanese is an advantage.
