Duties and Responsibilities

Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 150 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyzes, and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with UN Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians, and the science and technology community. UNDRR is committed to implement the UN Disability Inclusion Strategy to provide the foundation for sustainable and transformative progress on disability inclusion through all pillars of the work of the United Nations. Through the Strategy, the organizations of the United Nations system reaffirm that the full and complete realization of the human rights of all persons with disabilities is an inalienable, integral, and indivisible part of all human rights and fundamental freedoms. Within UNDRR's new Strategic Framework for 2022-2025, disability inclusive disaster risk reduction activities are not only mainstreamed throughout strategic objectives but also included for the first time as dedicated results and deliverables in support of disability inclusive disaster risk reduction. With this background and to provide reasonable accommodation to UNDRR staff member with visual disability, UNDRR ROAP seeks an individual contractor to assist with programme-related activities under the disability agenda in Asia and the Pacific as well as at the global level. This position also provides full support to a staff member with a visual disability in carrying out work-related activities ensuring equal access and leveraging technology to enhance accessibility of the environment and of information. The individual contractor will be based in Bangkok, Thailand and will work under the supervision of the Global Disability advisor with close coordination with UNDRR administrative team in UNDRR ROAP and Gender Advisor will provide additional guidance. Performance will be evaluated against agreed deliverables, responsiveness, and effectiveness in facilitating accessibility and participation. Regular review meetings will be conducted to monitor progress, provide feedback, and assess performance against the established objectives and expectations. The Individual Contractor will perform a wide range of office support and administrative functions, including facilitating the full participation of the staff member with visual disability in work-related activities. This may include but is not limited to: • Facilitate access to information systems and IT platforms not compatible with assistive technologies. • Convert visual and non-accessible materials (presentations, charts, diagrams, images) into accessible formats. • Provide real-time verbal description of visual content during meetings, workshops, and conferences. • Support preparation and delivery of presentations, including slide navigation and sequencing. • Assist with structured note-taking and summarizing key discussion points. • Facilitate early access to agendas, documents, and meeting materials. • Provide escort and mobility support within the workplace and in unfamiliar environments, including assistance in accessing office facilities such as the cafeteria, prayer rooms, meeting rooms, and other work-related spaces. • Assist with mobility and orientation during domestic and international travel using sighted guide techniques. • Support organization of workshops, meetings, and events, including accessibility briefings for venues. • Conduct desk research and compile materials for reports, briefings, and meetings. • Proofread and format documents to ensure accuracy, consistency, and accessibility standards. • Support scheduling, calendar management, and travel arrangements. • Maintain files, databases, and information systems. • Provide administrative and office support related to the implementation of the work programme and associated activities. • Perform other related duties as assigned. All deliverables are expected to be carried out in a timely, accurate, and client-oriented manner, ensuring effective accessibility, participation, and workflow continuity.

Qualifications/special skills

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Training or certification in support to people with visual disabilities and/or assistive technology is desirable. • A minimum of two years of experience in workplace assistance, accessibility support, administrative support, or a related field in a professional environment is required. • Experience in using Office 365 solution is desirable. • Experience in providing support to a person with a visual disability in a professional environment is desirable. • Experience in drafting and proofreading documentation in English is desirable.

Languages

Fluency in English is required.
