Background

UN City Copenhagen comprises two campuses: Campus 1 opened in 2013 and houses 1,600 employees from 108 different countries working in 10 different agencies. Campus 2 is home to UNICEF Supply Division with 400 employees and is the largest humanitarian warehouse in the world.

The 10 UN agencies resident in UN City vary in size and mandate. They do, however, share a common agenda: to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

The UN City Common Services (CS) plays a crucial role in delivering operational support services to the various offices situated within UN City. These encompass essential services such as building maintenance, canteen and catering services, cleaning, communications, driving, fitness center management, IT helpdesk, mail services, medical support, meetings and events services, and reception.

The UN Clinic in Copenhagen is part of the UN Common Services and is administered by UNDP. The clinic operates under the local Clinic Steering Committee.  The objective of the UN Clinic is to provide primary clinical care and occupational health services to personnel of the UN Common System and their recognized dependents (in particular for those from outside EU), and to provide referrals into the Danish health care system.

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the UN Clinic Doctor, the incumbent will fulfill the duties UN Clinic Coordinator (Nurse), in the UN City Copenhagen.

Duties and Responsibilities

Scope of Work:

Clinical Technical Duties:

  • Within delegated authority, the Nurse shall be responsible for the following duties:
  • Attend the UN Clinic.
  • Assist the UN Physician in the performance of his/her duties;
  • Performs diagnostic and screening tests such as: ECG, laboratory (blood and urine), and other tests as required.  
  • Facilitates referral and coordinate follow up to the UN Medical Doctor or to an outside physician, as required.
  • Depending on the patient’s risk factors, coordinate referral of general preventative activities (e.g. mammograms, pap smears, colonoscopies, etc.)
  • Liaise with Danish health authorities and external laboratories as required.
  • Ensures preparedness of staff travelling on missions or reassignments, including administration of appropriate vaccine, instructions on malaria prophylaxis and other travel-related ailments.
  • Instructs on the content and potential uses of the travel kit.
  • Assists in providing health education and health promotion programs;
  • Participates in work environment assessment, e.g. office ergonomics, and addresses other occupational health issues.
  • Plans and organizes preventive and promotes medical fairs;
  • Perform medical briefing for incoming staff and conduct first aid training;
  • Administer minor “outpatient” treatment and immunization/vaccination requirements;
  • Assists in maintaining  records of patients' medical data including consultations and treatment;
  • Maintain strict confidentiality with regards to patient’s medical records; patient management and treatment.
  • Perform medication, injection, dressing, stitching, foreign body extraction and so on as needed;
  • Performs other related duties as required

Administrative duties:

  • Maintain the UN Clinic in good order and keep the inventory of  medical supplies and equipment up-to-date and be prepared for disaster;
  • Provide the patient with certificates and medical reports requested by the UN according to rules and regulations
  • Coordinate and supervise the work of other UN Clinic personnel;
  • Check equipment and supplies on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis and maintain them in working order;
  • Enter medical data of patients into register, patient's file, and electronic databases;
  • Process patient invoices, including preparation and reconciliation of daily accounts.
  • Schedule consultations with the UN Physician for eligible staff and dependents;
  • Maintain a roster of available specialists for referrals and treatment when necessary;
  • Ensure a proper and safe disposal of hazardous material and medical waste in close coordination with the Medical Physician, Lab technicians , and Pharmacists
  • Identifies and plans clinics’ material, supplies and equipment requirements and raises requisitions accordingly;
  • Liaises with Procurement to establish essential contracts;

Institutional Arrangement:

  • The Clinical Coordinator is reporting to the Medical Doctor.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Registered Professional Nurse and first level degree from an accredited Baccalaureate Nursing Programme (University) or equivalent such as an accredited Diploma Programme (4 years).
  • Diploma recognized by the Danish health authorities to practice general medicine.
     

Experience:

5 years of continuous clinical experience in nursing preferably in a multicultural environment;

Required  skills:

  • Ability to work with computer and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) and knowledge of spreadsheet and database packages
  • Strong functional knowledge and skills as a medical practitioner.

Desired skills:

  • Certificates in ECG, CPR or Basic Life Support and ACLS or equivalent emergency medical care is an asset.
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant UN administrative policies and procedures is desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in teams and effectively interact with medical personnel and staff of all organizations involved.
  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills.
  • Tact and absolute respect of medical confidentiality.
  • Understanding of the Danish medical system desirable.
  • Experience in travel medicine is an asset.

Required Language(s):

  • Proficiency in the English and Danish languages.
