Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s Regional Office for Africa plays a vital role in the implementation of UNEP global programmes in the African region by initiating, coordinating, and catalysing regional and sub-regional cooperation and action in response to environmental challenges and emerging issues. The African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) was established in 1985 to provide a platform for African Ministers of Environment to deliberate on issues of importance to the continent and to provide policy guidance for environmental action. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) serves as the Secretariat to AMCEN and supports the organization of its regular and special sessions, Bureau meetings, and the implementation of its decisions. Under direct supervision of the Regional Director for ROA, the incumbent will be mainly responsible for supporting the AMCEN Secretariat to carry out the mandate of the Secretariat efficiently and effectively, provide support to African countries in the regional multilateral processes; and support other activities related to UNEP's-Africa Office work. The overall objective of the consultancy is to support the effective preparation, coordination, and follow-up of AMCEN activities, including ministerial sessions, Bureau meetings, and implementation of AMCEN decisions. The consultant will report directly to the Regional Director and work closely with the Law Division. The incumbent will perform the following duties: 1. Prepare the Inception report and work plan 2. Draft technical documents (briefs, reports, policy notes) 3. Prepare meeting documentation (agendas, summaries, outcomes) 4. Prepare the monthly progress reports 5. Prepare the Final report summarizing outputs and recommendations

Qualifications/special skills

Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental management/governance/policy related fields, sustainable development related fields is required. A first level university degree in combination with an additional two (2) years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, or data science programs is desirable. A minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in environmental policy development and associated natural resource and ecosystem management is required.

Languages

Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French is an asset.
