We improve lives

The IDB Group is a community of diverse, versatile, and passionate people who come together on a journey to improve lives in Latin America and the Caribbean. Our people find purpose and do what they love in an inclusive, collaborative, agile, and rewarding environment.

About this position

We are looking for a motivated, organized, and experienced consultant to serve as the technical editor for the Portuguese translation of the IDB Research Department’s 2026 flagship report on digitalization and artificial intelligence in Latin America and the Caribbean. A separate language editor will handle style and readability; the consultant, in turn, will focus their work on ensuring technical accuracy.

The IDB Research Department is currently producing the 2026 Development in the Americas (DIA), which explores how digitalization and artificial intelligence can be leveraged to advance economic development in Latin America and the Caribbean. The report is motivated by the region’s long-standing challenge of weak productivity growth and examines whether new technologies can help change that trajectory. It highlights both the promise of digitalization and AI to deliver measurable gains across sectors and the challenge that adoption remains shallow across firms, governments, and individuals. The report analyzes the underlying constraints—including gaps in institutions, human capital, and data infrastructure—and proposes policy priorities to foster broader adoption and translate technological advances into economy-wide productivity gains and improved public services.

The consultant will receive fully edited versions of the English chapters of the 2026 DIA report, along with draft Portuguese translations of those chapters. The consultant will ensure that the translated chapters are technically accurate, with appropriate use of language and economic and technical terminology. The purpose of this review is to ensure that the English and Portuguese versions of the chapters convey the same meaning. The goal is not to suggest additions, clarifications, or improvements to the book’s content. A glossary of preferred translations for selected terms may be provided. The consultant should be prepared to work within a tight timeline and remain flexible with respect to start dates.

What you’ll do

  • The consultant will receive the chapters of the 2026 DIA in the form of Microsoft Word files for the chapters themselves and Microsoft Excel files for the graphs and tables. The consultant will review and edit the Portuguese versions of these files. Chapters will have been edited by a language editor and may be delivered to the consultant out of sequence. Each chapter must be returned within 2 calendar days of receipt.
  • The consultant will apply their expertise in economics to verify the accuracy of the Portuguese translation by comparing it with the original English version, ensuring the correct and consistent use of economic terminology in Portuguese, as well as the conceptual coherence and consistency of the Portuguese version with the original English-language content.
  • For Word files, the consultant should make changes directly to the text using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes feature, rather than adding them as margin comments. For Excel files, the consultant should make changes directly in the relevant cells and highlight the edited cells with a different color to facilitate review.
  • The consultant will return the files to the language editor for a final read. If any questions remain, the consultant and the language editor may exchange individual chapters a second time. The consultant will resolve potential issues promptly within 1 day of receipt of a chapter.
  • The consultant will ensure that all visual elements—including titles, subtitles, figures, tables, notes, sources, footnotes, author bios, preface, and executive summary—are accurately translated and reflect appropriate economic language.
  • The consultant will maintain a consistent economic vocabulary and phrasing throughout the book.
  • The consultant will confirm that the Portuguese version maintains a professional and accessible tone, aligned with the target audience (i.e., policymakers, academics, or the general public).
