BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Within the Department of Mobility Pathways and Inclusion (DMPI), the Migration Health Division (MHD), has the institutional responsibility to oversee, support and coordinate IOM’s provision of migration health services globally.
As a key component of this since the Organization’s inception, the Health Assessment Programme (HAP) has delivered an array of medical services along regular pathways at the request of destination country governments. These services include a wide array of procedures such as screening, diagnostics, treatment, preventive measures, and health-related travel assistance, and are offered to migrants to facilitate resettlement, international employment, education, acquisition of temporary or permanent visas, participation in specific migrant assistance programmes, or during post-emergency relocation and repatriation efforts.
SUPERVISION
Under the overall supervision of the Senior Health Operations & Compliance Officer and direct supervision of the Programme Officer (Migration Health Assessments), the Intern – Health Assessment Programmes will assist in the Migration Health Assessments work in cooperation with other colleagues in IOM Headquarters and the Manila Global Shared Services Centre.
Responsibilities
The Intern will have the following duties and responsibilities:
- Contribute to knowledge management initiatives by supporting the updating and maintenance of the Global HAP SharePoint to facilitate access to up-to-date resources, guidance documents, and best practices for programme staff globally.
- Assist the team in developing information sheets for internal and external dissemination by gathering inputs and relevant information from colleagues.
- Support tasks related to the timely distribution of holograms to Country Offices and track inventory levels to support uninterrupted programme implementation, as required.
- Assist with the compilation and coordination of HAP-related inputs for meeting preparation and reporting, including collecting data and updates and drafting materials.
- Support quality initiatives in HAP and assist with the coordination and delivery of webinars and training activities, performing relevant tasks as required.
- Provide logistical and administrative support for other meetings and events, such as preparing invitations, managing participant lists, booking meeting rooms (in-person or virtual), developing meeting summaries, and circulating materials.
- Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
Learning Objectives
- Build knowledge on migration health assessment programmes by gaining exposure to IOM’s work in this area.
- Strengthen knowledge management and digital collaboration skills by helping facilitate access to resources through the Global HAAP SharePoint.
- Improve communication and drafting skills by contributing to information sheets, meeting materials, and by gathering and consolidating inputs from colleagues.
- Enhance organizational and coordination skills by supporting webinars, training activities, meetings, and events.
1. The Intern will gain experience in working in an international multicultural environment, within the United Nations system.
2. Gain experience in organization, management, and international cooperation activities.
3. Gain a better understanding of IOM’s work, as an intergovernmental organization in the field of Migration, and work on formulating and editing institutional strategies, priorities, and work plans.
4. The Intern can also access online training courses at the disposal of all IOM personnel.
5. The Intern will have the possibility to interact with IOM staff within Headquarters and IOM Missions.
Qualifications
Education
- Be enrolled in a Master's degree or higher in Public or Global Health, Epidemiology, Health Sciences or a related field from an accredited academic institution; or,
- Have graduated with a university degree in Public or Global Health, Epidemiology, Health Sciences or a related field, and if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation.
Experience
- Experience working on health and migration issues is an advantage; experience working with health data is desirable;
- Demonstrated ability to write clear and concisely, proven skills in writing summary documents and editing reports, project documents and proposals, is desirable;
- Experience in the usage of office software packages (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook etc.), including SharePoint.
Skills
- Demonstrated organizational skills;
- Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds;
- Practical experience of how to multi-task, prioritize and work independently.
Languages
IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish. All staff members are required to be fluent in one of the three languages.
For all applicants, fluency in English is required (oral and written).
Working knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is an advantage.

This internship opportunity is part of IOM’s 2026 Global Access Internship Programme, which is a sub-set of IOM’s regular internship programme. In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.

Depending on experience and location, IOM provides a small monthly stipend to help offset costs.
Candidates are also encouraged to research and study the cost of living in the duty station prior to applying.
For this programme, IOM will also provide travel arrangements and will cover visa-related costs.
Selection will be based on demonstrated qualifications, relevant experience, technical skills, and alignment with core competencies. The evaluation process may include written assessment, and/or interview.
Notes
Depending on experience and location, interns are granted a small monthly stipend to help offset costs. Interns benefiting from an internship allowance or scholarship granted by their university or other sponsoring body that includes financial remuneration or credits for coursework will not be eligible for the stipend.
IOM covers Interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the internship. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
