Your team

Within the The Aviation Transformation Directorate, "Aviation Sustainability" leads and manages the Agency’s activities towards the EU and its agencies, ICAO, States and other stakeholders in support to their environment, climate-change and related polities.

As a Software Engineering Expert within the Climate-neutral Aviation Support Service, you will contribute to the design, prototyping, integration and development of Aviation Sustainability platforms and digital services, such as FlyingGreen, supporting EUROCONTROL sustainability and digital transformation objectives.

Your role

Your role will be to:

  • Contribute to the design, development, integration and continuous improvement of Aviation Sustainability platforms and digital services, ensuring operational reliability, maintainability, scalability, and alignment with Aviation Sustainability objectives.
  • Contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of scalable full-stack cloud-native software solutions across front-end and back-end components using modern engineering practices and automation approaches.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, end-users, external suppliers, and Agency services involved in cloud hosting, infrastructure support, data management, and system integration to gather requirements, translate operational needs into technical solutions, and align solutions with Aviation Sustainability objectives.
  • Contribute to technical solution design, deployment approaches, integration activities and operational analytics to enable continuous platform improvement.
  • Develop, implement, and automate testing approaches, including validation and non-regression testing activities, to ensure software quality, stability, and operational continuity, in line with best practices.
  • Contribute to the preparation and evolution of cloud-based solutions and services, ensuring performance, maintainability, and compliance with applicable standards and operational requirements.
  • Investigate complex technical issues, identify technical improvements, and contribute to optimisation, reliability, and continuous improvement of digital services and analytical platforms.
  • Develop, review, and maintain technical documentation and implementation guidance supporting maintainability, operational continuity, and knowledge sharing.

Required qualifications, experience & competencies

  • Candidates must fulfil one of the following educational and professional experience requirements:
    • Completion of third level studies in a relevant domain (e.g. Software Engineering, Computer Science) meeting European Qualifications Framework (EQF) level 7 followed by at least 3 years relevant professional experience (e.g. software engineering, cloud-native systems, digital platform development etc.) ;
    • Completion of third level studies in a relevant domain (e.g. Software Engineering, Computer Science) meeting European Qualifications Framework (EQF) level 6 followed by at least 4 years relevant professional experience (e.g. software engineering, cloud-native systems, digital platform development etc.)
  • Internal candidates can check on the intranet to see what level of in-house experience is considered equivalent to educational qualifications where appropriate.
  • Experience in developing scalable full-stack solutions, covering both front-end (e.g., React, Material UI, OpenLayers 8) and back-end technologies (e.g., PostgreSQL, Cosmos DB), with a strong emphasis on cloud-native software development.
  • Experience in end-to-end software development activities, including design, development, testing, deployment, and operational monitoring.
  • Experience with technical solution design and implementation for operational digital platforms and analytical services.
  • Expertise in CI/CD pipeline management, automation, cloud deployments, orchestration, and operational monitoring for reliable and scalable software delivery. Familiarity with Azure DevOps and Databricks would be an asset.
  • Experience with Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems or other mission-critical environments would be an asset.

  • The working languages of the Agency are English and French. For this particular job, candidates must be proficient users of English at level C1. The selected candidate will be required to become a basic user of French at level A1 before the end of the probation period. The levels relate to the European-framework-reference Common European Framework of References for languages (CEFR).

    Internal staff appointed for a determined period
    • Retain their current type of appointment duration.
    • Continue under their existing appointment duration, as appointment durations are not cumulative.
    • The duration of their appointment will therefore not restart upon selection to the new post, i.e. the remaining duration of their current determined appointment continues to apply.
    • Renewal(s): This appointment may be renewed several times, but its total duration, including all renewal periods, may not exceed nine (9) years.
    • Conversion: Conversion to an undetermined duration appointment is possible where all of the following cumulative conditions are met: the post is confirmed as being of a lasting nature; the staff member has completed at least five years of service; the staff member’s performance has been satisfactory; and the conversion is in the interests of the service. Conversion is therefore not automatic.

    • Retain their current type of appointment duration.
    At the end of the 5 Year period of the post for which they were selected:
    • If the assignment is extended, they will continue in the post in accordance with the applicable rules.
    • If the assignment is not extended and/or the duties are not confirmed as being of a lasting nature, they will be transferred to another post corresponding to their “previous” type of post, job level, and function group.
  • The selected candidate must successfully complete a probationary period of nine (9) months before being established in the post.
  • The selected candidate shall be appointed at the grade set out in this vacancy notice, or if a group of grades has been published for a job level, in principle at the basic grade of the published job level.
  • Candidates declared suitable who are not selected for the post will be placed on a reserve list for similar roles. The reserve list will be valid for one year from the closing date of applications.
