Research Officer II - Gender
International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA)

The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) seeks to recruit a Research Officer (II) – Gender who supports multidisciplinary research under three initiatives: ACCEL-3R (Accelerating the Adoption of Water Retention, Recharge, and Reuse Measures in the Horn of Africa: Testing Multi-Level Intervention Bundles to Trigger Socio-Hydrological Tipping Points); the CGIAR Science Program on Animal and Aquatic Foods (SAAF); and the CGIAR Gender Accelerator. The incumbent will contribute to implementation, fieldwork, data analysis, and dissemination of integrative and strategic gender research, including gender-transformative approaches, women's empowerment, social inclusion, and equitable scaling of innovations.
The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) is an international autonomous, non-profit, research organization temporarily based in Beirut, Lebanon supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ICARDA is committed to the improvement of livelihoods of the resource-poor in dry areas by enhancing food security and alleviating poverty through agricultural research, and the equitable use of natural resources. Key Responsibilities:
- Implement gender-responsive and gender-transformative research interventions.
- Integrate gender and social inclusion across crops, livestock, water, and aquatic food systems research.
- Lead qualitative and quantitative fieldwork, surveys, FGDs, KIIs, and participatory methods.
- Generate evidence on women’s empowerment, gender norms, and inclusive innovation adoption.
- Represent ICARDA and CGIAR in workshops, conferences, and expert consultations.
- Develop partnerships with local NGOs and strengthen gender research capacity of national partners.
- Contribute to monitoring, evaluation, learning, and donor reporting.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Academic and professional qualifications:
Education:
- Masters in Gender Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Rural Development, Economics, Human Geography, or related field.
Experience:
- A minimum of five years working experience in gender, climate change, agriculture, livestock, water or food systems research.
Skills:
- Knowledge of gender-transformative approaches and women’s empowerment.
- Excellent communication, writing, and teamwork skills.
Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Position level: HG 14
Minimum Base salary: USD 978 per month
Terms of appointment: This is a National Staff (NS) position with the Initial appointment of two years renewable appointment based on performance and funding availability. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc. The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus with dining and sports facilities that are located on site.
