Mission and objectives

The General Assembly gave UNREC the mandate to provide, upon request, substantive support for initiatives and other efforts of Member States of the African region towards the realization of measures of peace, arms limitations and disarmament in the region.

UNREC was further mandated to cooperate with the African Union and to coordinate the implementation of regional activities in Africa leading to peace, arms control and disarmament.

Context

The current security situation in Africa, more specifically in the Sahel, is marked by a resurgence of armed attacks and the proliferation of armed groups. This increasingly worrying context is fueled by terrorism and the recruitment of young combatants who may strengthen terrorist groups. Young people are therefore exposed to covert recruitment campaigns aimed at supplying armed groups with fighters. In order to establish a youth awareness-raising and training programme to combat this phenomenon, address the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in sub-Saharan Africa, and promote peacebuilding and peace consolidation, the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa, UNREC, is seeking a specialist United Nations Volunteer in crisis prevention to support its activities.
