The UN Women Fiji Multi-Country Office (MCO) is based in Suva, Fiji and works alongside over 30 other UN agencies in the region and 14 countries and territories across the Pacific Region. Reporting to the Communications and Media Specialist based in Suva, with secondary reporting line to the Country Programme Coordinator based in Apia, Samoa, the Communications Analyst is responsible for assisting in the planning and implementation of the Office communications and advocacy strategies to increase the standing and awareness of UN Women with partners, the media and the public. 

The Communications Analyst works in close collaboration with the Programme, Operations and technical teams in the Fiji MCO, staff of other UN Agencies, Government officials, media, multilateral and bilateral donors and civil society.

Scope of Work:

Provide substantive support to the implementation of external communication and outreach/advocacy strategies and plans:

  • Support the implementation of UN Women communication strategies, advocacy and outreach plans and activities in coordination with the Communications & Media Specialist, ensuring gender perspective;
  • Supports the integration of communication, advocacy and outreach strategies into proposals for project/programmes and other initiatives, as necessary;
  • Monitor and analyze print and social media and provide analysis to MCO; 
  • Assist in the creation and scheduling of social media content, including posts, captions, graphics and short videos aligned with corporate guidelines;
  • Provide inputs and support to the launch of in-country UN Women/ UN system corporate and local campaigns and special events.

Coordinate and contribute substantively to the development and dissemination of advocacy materials:

  • Draft briefing materials, and press releases and coordinate its dissemination through effective channels;
  • Identify storylines for publication and articles; 
  • Promote and disseminate corporate advocacy materials for launching flagship initiatives, publications, and campaigns;
  • Coordinate the translation/adaption/rewriting of information received, printing and dissemination of publications and audio-visual materials;
  • Follow guidelines from HQ and RO.

Coordinate media relations for the MCO:

  • Support the establishment of relevant relationships;
  • Maintain list of relevant media in countries under the MCO; 
  • Respond to inquiries for public and UN system information materials, in coordination with the senior management and Communications & Media Specialist;
  • Support organizing roundtable discussions, press conferences and briefing session for press, as required; 
  • Draft talking points.

Build and maintain partnerships and maintain relations with donors:

  • Maintain relationships with partners and alliances to enhance visibility; 
  • Liaise with advocacy partners and undertake outreach to civil society organizations, governments, and other groups to ensure that newsworthy information reaches the public and donors, as delegated.

Support coordination of the MCO’s web/ online presence:

  • Facilitate coordination of MCO’s websites’ content and maintenance based on corporate requirements;
  • Support the coordination of MCO’s social media accounts in line with corporate social media policy;
  • Upload information to knowledge management system on a regular basis, including news, updates, resources.

Support knowledge management and documentation of communications activities:

  • Identify and synthesize best practices and lessons learned directly linked to programme goals and activities;
  • Assist in compiling and organizing communications materials, publications, media coverage and digital assets for internal records and knowledge management systems.
  • Support the documentation of communication activities, events and campaigns, including maintaining archives of photos, videos and media products.
  • Assist in collecting and organizing examples of communications outputs and lessons learned to support internal reporting and learning.
  • Support the preparation of presentations, briefing notes and communications summaries, as requested.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Certifications:

  • Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in communications, public relations, journalism or relevant field is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • At least one (1) year (Masters), or minimum of three (3) years (Bachelors Degree) of progressively responsible work experience at national or international level in public relations, communications or advocacy is required. 
  • Experience in drafting communication materials such as media releases, web stories, newsletters, articles and social media posts is desirable.
  • Experience in social media usage and management and digital content creation is required.
  • Experience with content creation tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite or similar platforms is preferred.
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.), spreadsheet and database packages, experience in handling of web-based management systems is required.
  • Experience in the use of a modern web-based ERP System, preferably Oracle Cloud, is desirable.
  • Experience in working with the UN System is an asset.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required. 
  • Fluency in the national language is an asset.
