Mission and objectives

UN Women is the United Nations entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide.

UN Women supports UN Member States as they set global standards for achieving gender equality, and works with governments and civil society to design laws, policies, programmes and services needed to ensure that the standards are effectively implemented and truly benefit women and girls worldwide. It works globally to make the vision of the Sustainable Development Goals a reality for women and girls and stands behind women’s equal participation in all aspects of life, focusing on four strategic priorities:

Women lead, participate in and benefit equally from governance systems
Women have income security, decent work and economic autonomy
All women and girls live a life free from all forms of violence
Women and girls contribute to and have greater influence in building sustainable peace and resilience, and benefit equally from the prevention of natural disasters and conflicts and humanitarian action
UN Women also coordinates and promotes the UN system’s work in advancing gender equality, and in all deliberations and agreements linked to the 2030 Agenda. The entity works to position gender equality as fundamental to the Sustainable Development Goals, and a more inclusive world.

Context

UN Women, guided by the principles of equality and non-discrimination established in the United Nations Charter, works to empower women and girls, advance gender equality, and promote the full realization of women’s human rights. The organization leads and coordinates efforts across the UN system to transform international commitments into concrete actions, while supporting Member States and fostering partnerships with civil society, governments, and the private sector.

Its work focuses on addressing the root causes of gender inequality through integrated and transformative approaches. Key priorities include strengthening women’s leadership and autonomy; promoting gender-responsive laws, policies, and institutions; supporting women’s participation in peacebuilding, security, and humanitarian contexts; expanding equitable access to opportunities and resources; advancing women’s economic empowerment; promoting positive social norms through engagement with men and boys; strengthening gender statistics; and coordinating UN system efforts on gender equality.

The UN Women Strategic Plan 2026–2029 aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls, grounded in frameworks such as CEDAW, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the Women, Peace and Security agenda, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with SDG 5 at its core.

Private Sector Engagement
Recognizing the essential role of businesses in advancing gender equality, UN Women’s Private Sector Engagement Policy (2023) provides a framework for collaboration with companies, foundations, and other private sector actors. Partnerships are guided by principles of integrity, accountability, independence, and risk management, ensuring alignment with UN Women’s mandate and strategic priorities.

Global private sector engagement is led by the Strategic Partnerships Division (SPD), which integrates public and private partnerships through its Public Partnerships, Communications and Advocacy, and Private Sector Partnerships functions.

UN Women Brazil: Private Sector Strategy
In Brazil, the private sector portfolio works closely with UN Women’s programmatic areas, including Women’s Leadership and Political Participation, Women’s Economic Empowerment, and Ending Violence Against Women. The strategy is structured around two complementary modalities:

1. Commitment to Gender Equality:
• Supports companies, particularly those at an early stage of their gender equality journey, in adopting and implementing the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs). Activities include gender diagnostics, strategy development, implementation support, and progress monitoring.

2. Partnerships for Change Promotes collaboration through:
• Alliances: Multi-stakeholder platforms addressing thematic and sectoral challenges, including the Unstereotype Alliance, the Alliance for More Women in Audiovisual, partnerships in the financial and insurance sectors, and the HeForShe Alliance.
• Private Investment in Projects: Partnerships through which companies invest in existing UN Women initiatives or co-create innovative programs aligned with national and global priorities, expanding impact and outreach.

The UNV Expert will report to the UN Women Brazil Programme Analyst for Private Sector Partnerships and receive operational and administrative support from the Programme Associate, who will serve as the focal point for contractual and payment-related matters.
